In Lindi, a trail leads far back in time: scientific expeditions to Tendaguru uncovered dinosaur fossils from the Late Jurassic. The site is on a hill about 310 metres above sea level. The site and surrounding landscape document a significant chapter in Earth’s history through evidence of life and the development of landforms in the rock layers.

Tendaguru: Dinosaur Finds and Earth History

The Tendaguru Expedition carried out extensive investigations in the region between 1909 and 1913. Fossils of theropods, ornithischians and sauropods were found at Tendaguru. Almost 400 of the fossils recovered there, including 80 articulated skeletons, are kept at Berlin’s Museum für Naturkunde. The qualifier “articulated” highlights a different characteristic from the total number: it refers to skeletons preserved in connected arrangement.

Educational and research activities, camping and film work are associated with the Tendaguru site. If you plan to take part in any of these activities, check the specific arrangements in advance.

Natural history and coastal history offer two distinct ways to explore Lindi: Tendaguru connects fossil finds with the development of landforms, while the island ruins draw attention to architecture, Swahili culture and trade. The time scales also differ considerably.

Kilwa Kisiwani and Songo Mnara: History on the Indian Ocean

The islands of Kilwa Kisiwani and Songo Mnara provide exceptional evidence of the spread of Swahili coastal culture, the Islamisation of East Africa and the extensive, flourishing trade in the Indian Ocean from the Middle Ages to the modern era. Tourist activities associated with the historic ruins include guided walks. If you plan to take one, check in advance what is currently available.

At the northern end of Songo Mnara are the remains of five mosques, a palace complex and about 33 coral-stone and timber houses. The buildings are enclosed by surrounding walls. Here, several different types of building stand together within a walled area.

The Great Mosque of Kilwa Kisiwani is the oldest surviving mosque on the East African coast. It has sixteen domed and vaulted bays. This brings a single religious building into focus at Kilwa Kisiwani, whereas the description of Songo Mnara covers several mosques, a palace complex and residential houses.

The historical context of the two Swahili trading towns can be defined more precisely: their prosperity was based, particularly from the 13th to the 16th century, on control of trade across the Indian Ocean with Arabia, India and China. Thus, alongside the longer period from the Middle Ages to the modern era, a specific chapter of this trading history is identified.

Lindi in the Wider Destination of Tanzania

Tanzania’s coastline is more than 804 kilometres long. It includes Unguja and Pemba, which together form Zanzibar, as well as Mafia Island. This nationwide perspective describes the wider coastal region; Lindi’s historic trading centres lead to a specific chapter of Swahili culture and Indian Ocean trade.

Comparing these themes reveals two time periods far apart: Tendaguru’s finds take you back to the Late Jurassic, while the ruins of Kilwa Kisiwani and Songo Mnara tell the story of medieval and early modern coastal culture. This makes Lindi a destination that appeals to a range of historical interests, without conflating natural and cultural history.
