Zumikon combines a gently rolling landscape shaped by forests and meadows with the Forchbahn connection to ZĂĽrich Stadelhofen. The Forchbahn S18 connects Zumikon with ZĂĽrich Stadelhofen in 18 minutes; actual journey times may vary. This presents a practical choice when selecting a holiday apartment: should your stay focus mainly on the rural character, or also include an outing to ZĂĽrich? If travelling by train, check the timetable for your travel date.

Landscape and trails in Zumikon

Zumikon lies on the western flank of the Wassberg in the Pfannenstiel range. The municipality is gently rolling and shaped by forests and meadows; the landscape invites you to go for walks and enjoy leisure activities. This geographical setting gives your stay a distinct focus on the outdoors.

The ZÄMEGOLAUFE trails in Zumikon are between 1.5 and 10 kilometres long. The programme has three categories: Yellow (“very relaxed”), Orange (“relaxed”) and Red (“brisk”). When planning, compare your preferred route length with the stated pace category. Route lists may change; check the latest information before setting out.

One specific hiking route is cantonal route 531.0, “Rehalp – Zollikerberg Bhf – Zumikon”, which follows the Chapfweg. If you plan to take this trail, check the latest hiking information for conditions or possible diversions.

The MĂĽlitobel picnic and barbecue area is idyllically situated above the banks of the Tobelbach on an official hiking trail. There is running drinking water nearby. Including the picnic and barbecue area in your plans lets you combine a stay by the Tobelbach with a route along an official hiking trail.

Bad Juch can also be incorporated into your day’s plans using the nearby stops: it is about a seven-minute walk from each of the Forchbahn S18 stops Waltikon and Dorfplatz, as well as from the bus stops Gössikon, Waltikon and Zumikon. Stop arrangements may change, so check the information before your visit.

Art and history

The MilchhĂĽtte Gallery is a public art gallery on Dorfstrasse in Zumikon. Until the mid-1970s, it was a working milk hut. Its current use as a gallery and its former function as a milk hut give the place two distinct cultural and historical associations. The exhibition programme may change; if you are interested, check the current dates.

The area’s older history can also be placed in context: archaeological traces of settlement in the Zumikon area date from the Late Bronze Age, including the Gössikon-Küsnachtertobel terraced settlement. Zumikon was first mentioned in 946 as “de Zumminga”. Its church history includes a branch chapel of Zürich’s Grossmünster, mentioned in 1271; the church was rebuilt in 1730–31. The historical references therefore range from early settlement traces and the first mention of the name to later phases of church construction.

Events are occasionally held in the former home of Max Bill. Zumikon’s cultural offerings also include concerts, gatherings, visits and cultural trips. As individual events may change, check which dates fall during your stay before travelling.
