A lido in a nature reserve, a raised and transitional bog of national importance, and exhibitions on pile-dwelling and Roman times offer different highlights for a trip to Wetzikon. The small town is in the Hinwil district of the canton of Zurich, in the Zurich Oberland, near Lake Pfäffikon and between Uster and Rapperswil-Jona. When planning your trip, consider whether you would like to focus on nature by the water, archaeological history, a town festival or an urban stroll. The timing also varies: some attractions are seasonal or tied to specific dates, while others are permanent features of the town.
Water, bog and green space
Auslikon lido is located in a nature reserve on Lake Pfäffikon. Swimming and playing are among the activities on offer; Stand Up Boards are rented out during the bathing season. Rentals are seasonal, and availability may change. If you have a particular day in mind, it is best to check in advance whether boards will be available then.
Robenhauser Riet is a raised and transitional bog of national importance. Murgenthal Park is a green space in Wetzikon with opportunities for recreation and leisure. Together, these offer a contrast between landscape classification and park use, alongside swimming: the bog describes a type of landscape, the park is a place for recreation, and the lido offers activities by the water. This makes it possible to distinguish between a nature area, a green space and a seasonal offering by the lake.
Pile-dwelling history and Roman times
Using a wide range of objects, the Wetzikon Museum documents the history of Wetzikon from the Neolithic period to the 21st century. Its permanent exhibitions focus on two specific subjects: pile dwellings and Roman times. These topics sit alongside the museum’s broad chronological scope; if you are particularly interested in one of the two periods, you can explore it separately from the full span of history covered.
The pile-dwelling trail opened on 1 September 2022. If you are planning to visit it today, please check current access arrangements. The Wetzikon-Robenhausen archaeological site lies south of Lake Pfäffikon and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps”. The museum, pile-dwelling trail and archaeological site each offer a different way to explore pile-dwelling history; the permanent exhibition on Roman times adds another topic to the historical focus.
Wetziker Chilbi: dates and attractions
Wetziker Chilbi is scheduled for the first Sunday after the Feast of the Assumption. Over the three days of the festival, there are around 40 rides and game stalls, as well as food stands and festival restaurants. Individual attractions and vendors may vary. Since the exact dates change each year, check the dates for the year you plan to travel. Chilbi and the lido require different planning: the bathing season determines when to visit the lido, while the festival follows the calendar for that particular year.
A different view of the town
Wetzikon Town Square features cobblestone paths, shops, cafés, restaurants, historic buildings and modern facilities. This gives the square an urban focus alongside the nature and museum themes. Its mix of dining, shopping, historic buildings and modern facilities differs both from the museum’s wide-ranging historical perspective and from the landscape themes around the bog and lake. If you would also like to include an urban stroll in your travel plans, Town Square is a specific place to explore.
