In Bonstetten, a restored hydropower plant with historic machinery meets hiking trails across the Balderen. There is also an Energy Trail showcasing different forms of energy supply, as well as archaeological traces from several periods. A stay here offers the chance to combine the history of technology with outdoor activities and local history.
Hydropower and the Energy Trail
The Bonstetten Turbine Museum preserves a restored small hydropower plant with its original machinery and makes it accessible to the public. The plant includes a restored pond with an inlet and weir, as well as a pressure pipe leading to the turbine. Approved in 1916, the plant once powered a cider press, a hay elevator, an oat crusher, a barley crusher, a maize chopper, a winnowing machine and a threshing machine. Together, the machines show how the use of hydropower extended far beyond the turbine itself.
The Bonstetten Energy Trail has nine stations. The route takes 50 to 60 minutes of walking time, with about two hours in total. It starts at Bonstetten-Wettswil railway station; from there, it is 100 metres uphill to the first station. A bus runs from the final station back to the railway station. Check the latest route information and return connections before setting out.
Station 1 introduces the Oktogon development, with 80 apartments, offices and a restaurant, which uses waste heat from a sewer. Station 2 focuses on a wood-chip heating system that uses wood from the surrounding forest to supply heat to more than 140 residential units, ten commercial units, the primary and secondary schools, and a church. Operating supply figures may change.
Hikes across the Balderen
A hike from Bonstetten-Wettswil to ZĂĽrich Wollishofen crosses the Balderen. It is eight kilometres long, rated moderate and takes about two and a half hours. To reach the starting point, take the S-Bahn to Bonstetten-Wettswil railway station. Check current trail conditions and the timetable before setting out.
The “Pässe: Balderen” hike offers a different view of the landscape: from a meadow on the Balderen, the view stretches towards Zürich. At Dachenmas, the route joins the Ämtlerweg, crosses the Reppischtal and then climbs the Balderenweg to the Albis crossing. The Ämtlerweg runs from Bonstetten through the Affoltern district over three days; for this longer hike, too, check current trail conditions before setting out.
Local history and landscape
Three burial mounds from the Bronze Age and Hallstatt period are the earliest traces of human settlement in Bonstetten. Remains of a Roman dwelling were also found in the Gibel area. The SchĂĽrmatt reservoir adds evidence of technical infrastructure to this history: the Bonstetten Water Supply Cooperative built it in 1899. It is considered an important testament to technological progress and the expansion of infrastructure in rural communities towards the end of the 19th century.
The reservoir lies southeast of Bonstetten, at a higher elevation. To the southwest is Birchwald forest, while cultivated land stretches out in the other directions. A field path passes east of the artificially raised reservoir mound. In another part of the village, the Reformed Church stands at Chilestrasse 1.
Choosing Bonstetten as a place to stay
Bonstetten consists of Bonstetten-Dorf and Bonstetten-Schachen. Bonstetten-Wettswil railway station is in the Schachen neighbourhood at 527 metres above sea level. Bonstetten-Dorf is by the municipal building and church, at 543 metres. These local place names can help you work out where a holiday apartment in Bonstetten is located when planning your stay.
Bonstetten is in the Affoltern district, also known as Knonaueramt or Säuliamt, just under ten kilometres from the outskirts of Zürich. The Albis ridge, the Reppischtal and the Aettenberg clearly separate the village from the metropolis. When planning a stay, it is therefore useful to consider both the village’s neighbourhoods and the landscape in which the hiking trails run.
