Situated on the shores of Lake Geneva, Prangins offers panoramic views of the Alps; Château de Prangins stands on a natural hill above the lake. The château and its museum are cultural properties of national importance. The historic town centre, with its commercial character, is also listed in the Federal Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites of National Importance (ISOS). The lakeshore, local history and château thus highlight different aspects of the town.
The Château and Promenade des Lumières
The Promenade des Lumières is a discovery trail that runs around the Château. Around twenty silhouettes associated with the château offer historical information and anecdotes in French, English and German. They give the walk a narrative focus and connect it with history in three languages. The promenade is free to access at any time. When the museum is closed, two thirds of the route remain accessible.
Kitchen garden: gardening heritage and heirloom varieties
The kitchen garden at Château de Prangins is Switzerland’s largest historic vegetable garden. Restored to its original form, it now serves as a conservatory for preserving old regional varieties and showcasing domesticated biodiversity. Across 5,500 m², almost 200 species and varieties of fruit, vegetables, herbs and other useful plants found in the region in the 18th century are grown according to the principles of organic farming. A visit to the garden thus goes hand in hand with exploring the diversity of historic varieties.
The kitchen garden is open year-round; admission is free, and an audio guide is available in three languages. The programme also includes guided tours, workshops and events. Harvests are occasionally offered for tasting, depending on the season.
Exhibitions and craft-related themes
The exhibition «Indiennes. Un tissu à la conquête du monde» includes a study area where visitors can view textiles up close and explore the collection and printing techniques through an interactive multimedia experience. The Centre des indiennes offers hands-on workshops where visitors can try dyeing with plant-based dyes. Dates for individual workshops may vary.
The former reception rooms of the Château, including the salon, dining rooms and libraries, offer another historical perspective. They provide the setting for an exhibition of around 600 historic objects. The former rooms and the textile exhibition focus on different things: the historic reception rooms and objects on the one hand, and fabrics, the collection and printing techniques on the other.
Town trails, forest and lakeshore
The Parcours didactique au cœur de Prangins is a circular route in the town centre with five educational stops. Prangins also has the educational walking trail Sentier didactique du Bois-des-Ages. The forests of Prangins are just a few steps from the village centre and offer a place to relax and recharge. You can choose between two different ways to spend time outdoors: a circular route with stops or a wooded area.
Picnics are permitted at Plage de Promenthoux. The beach has outdoor showers, toilets and a snack bar; there is also a boat launch accessible to people with disabilities. The Prangins Baroque Festival adds another cultural highlight: it has been held every year since it was founded in 2020. Individual editions and programmes vary. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for the relevant edition.
