In Bussigny, you’ll encounter public art, historic buildings and trails offering a range of discoveries. A cultural trail leads to artworks in streets, parks and public squares; other walks focus on local history, forests and nature observation. When choosing a holiday apartment, this variety can help guide your plans: would you like to focus on art and history, or explore trails and observation points instead?
Local history and culture in Bussigny
The Hôtel de Ville was built in 1901 and the Grande salle in 1925. Both buildings were renovated and reopened in 2006. The Temple was built in 1857 on the remains of a place of worship dating from the 17th century. The architectural heritage also includes the Château, built by the Polier family, and the Maisonnette, which served as a summer residence for the writer Isabelle de Montolieu Polier.
The history of the Guilde du Livre is also linked to the Château: Albert Mermoud, who founded it in Lausanne in 1936, regularly welcomed figures such as Louis Aragon, André Gide, Blaise Cendrars and Denis de Rougemont there. Another cultural tradition is the Fête de l’Abbaye des Laboureurs. It takes place every two years and has been celebrated since the 19th century.
«Art dans la ville» takes you on a cultural trail through Bussigny, with sculptures, murals and installations in streets, parks and public squares. Among the artworks mentioned is a red version of Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd’s sculpture «Non-violence», which the artist gave to the municipality of Bussigny. If you’re also interested in literature, the Bibliothèque communale et scolaire has a collection of 19,000 books and other works, divided into a children’s and a adults’ section. The library is wheelchair accessible.
Walks and nature observation
The Grand Sève forest is home to the Refuge, the Sentier des arbres & oiseaux and the Piste Vita. Illustrated panels along the Sentier des arbres et oiseaux introduce trees, shrubs and birds. Downloadable audio recordings supplement the panels with explanations and birdsong. The entire route is wheelchair accessible and was specifically designed for people who are blind or visually impaired.
A different focus awaits you on the Sentier du 10'000e, a route of 10,000 steps through Bussigny. A street-art mural by a Vaud-based artist and a trio from Bussigny marks the starting point; along the way, visitors can look for around twenty hidden figures. The walk «Je découvre ma ville en m'amusant» offers a playful and educational route between the old village, the town centre and the nature of Bussigny. On the Parcours ludique, the stops range from Parc du Centre to the forêt de la chocolatière: fifteen fun activities and landscape features guide pedestrians along the trail.
At the waterside locations, too, there are different opportunities for observation. La Gouille comprises a small pond, a small, intermittently water-filled pool area and a Murgiez—a pile of stones that provides a habitat. A bench serves as a nature observation point there. The Étang du Jura is a 60 m² pond with a footbridge and surrounding benches; from the bridge, you can observe the area’s biodiversity.
