Vernayaz brings together the gorge landscape of the Trient with historic routes and traces of early tourism. The entrance to the Gorges du Trient is right next to the Mont-Blanc Express station. If you are considering a stay in Vernayaz, this gives you a convenient arrival point near one of the area’s defining natural attractions. Hiking trails and cultural history also offer different points of interest to consider when planning your trip.

Gorge, walkways and waterfall

The Gorges du Trient is a gorge cut into crystalline rock by the Trient River. Erosion began around 20,000 years ago. The visitor route includes walkways attached to the rock faces. The gorge was opened to tourists from 1860 onwards; galleries were built in 1866 so visitors could view the Cascade de la Pissevache up close.

The Cascade de la Pissevache has a drop of 116 metres. Artists captured it in their works, helping it gain international recognition. Since 1988, the Gorges du Trient has been listed in the Swiss Federal Inventory of Landscapes and Natural Monuments. This natural attraction brings together geological history, a striking waterfall and a long history of tourism.

Hikes with different highlights

The Route des Diligences offers a different way to experience the area. The 13-kilometre route passes through natural landscapes to Finhaut and is used by hikers and mountain bikers. With 51 hairpin bends, it makes for a varied family hike. The route is also part of the historic and cultural ViaCook route, which follows the path taken through Switzerland in 1863 by the first organised group tour led by travel pioneer Thomas Cook.

When planning, the start, destination and return journey are all worth considering: the Route des Diligences can be reached by train from Vernayaz, and a return journey on the Mont-Blanc Express is possible from Finhaut. Parking is available at Vernayaz station. Check the timetable for your travel dates. This will help you coordinate your journey with your chosen route without assuming a return trip or a specific schedule.

The Tour de Vernayaz audio trail offers a different focus. It passes through Fond du Mont, by the Cascade de la Pissevache and along the banks of the RhĂ´ne. One audio segment is about fish farming. The stated duration is a guide to walking time only; it does not include breaks to listen to the podcasts. Unlike the Route des Diligences, the focus here is not on the 13-kilometre distance and destination of Finhaut, but on walking time and listening breaks along the way.

Tourism history and fortifications

Belle Époque tourism in Vernayaz began with the opening of the Gorges du Trient and Cascade de la Pissevache to visitors. The historic hotels built in the village during the 19th century bear witness to this growth. It coincided with the railway of 1859 and the construction of the Route des Diligences to Chamonix, which took place from 1855 to 1867. The station’s former name, “Vernayaz-Gorges du Trient,” also pointed to the starting point of the route to this excursion destination.

The village’s history also includes underground fortifications built during the Second World War to secure the Rhône plain. The underground fort extends over three levels and comprises a labyrinth of branching galleries. The escape-room game “Stratégie” is offered in the former I-Docens military fortress. Alongside nature and hiking trails, Vernayaz therefore offers historic buildings and a puzzle game as different ways to spend your stay.
