Historic steam train rides, two museums and trails through the RhĂ´ne Valley give Oberwald a varied character. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the different themes and route details: some experiences start in the village, while others lead from Gletsch to Oberwald or further through the region.

Furka Mountain Railway and arrival

Seasonal historic steam train rides operate on the Furka Mountain Railway between Realp, Gletsch and Oberwald through high-alpine scenery. Operating arrangements may vary, so check the timetable before your visit. If you arrive via the Furka or Grimsel Pass or through the Furka Tunnel, Oberwald is the first village you reach in Goms.

There is also a specific connection to help you find your way at the station: the DFB station in Oberwald is linked by an underpass to the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway station. This helps you identify the locations of the two stations on arrival without confusing them with one another.

Village history in the museum and chapel

The Oberwald local history museum offers a glimpse into life in the village in the past. “Toni's ski and local history museum” provides a broader look at rural everyday life in Upper Valais, with tools, furniture, clothing, school materials, toys and other objects on display. The museum also illustrates more than 100 years of ski history. The two museums therefore focus on different subjects: life in Oberwald in the past, and everyday objects and ski history in Upper Valais.

Another historical landmark is St. Christopher Chapel, built in 1768. Its altar is attributed in style to the sculptor and painter Johannes Trubmann, who came from KĂĽsnacht. The construction date and attribution provide a specific point of reference for the local and artistic history of a visit.

Hiking between Oberwald and Gletsch

One hiking route is associated with the historic Furka Mountain Railway. With a little luck, you may spot the steam train, the Rotten Viaduct and a train emerging from a spiral tunnel in the rock along the way. The hiking trail from Gletsch to Oberwald is downhill overall and is described as leisurely. The 5.6-kilometre walk is listed as taking 2 hours and 30 minutes, with 178 metres of ascent and 566 metres of descent. The highest point is at 1,775 metres and the lowest at 1,368 metres.

The route offers views of Obergoms and follows a stretch alongside the young Rotten. Here the trail is narrow and steep in places—a key distinction from the route’s overall downhill profile. Those looking for a different route through the region can take the Rottenweg Oberwald–Reckingen, which starts in Oberwald and passes through the picturesque Rhône Valley with its many authentic villages.

Climbing garden and approach

The Wolfspfad climbing garden in Oberwald offers routes on very grippy gneiss, graded from 5a to around 6b. Route grades may change as a result of maintenance. The hiking trail to the foot of the climbing garden starts directly behind the church. If the road is closed or you are travelling by public transport, you can reach the foot of the climbing garden via this trail in around 20 minutes. This time refers to the approach, not the duration of the climb; access conditions may vary seasonally.

Winter activities and regional cuisine

The Sonnenloipe Oberwald–Münster starts at Oberwald railway station and ends in Münster on Furkastrasse. It is 8.80 kilometres long, easy and has virtually no incline, making it suitable for beginners in cross-country skiing. As a seasonal trail, its usability depends on snow and weather conditions. The “Rhonequelle” winter experience offers a descent along the well-prepared route from the source of the Rhône to Oberwald, by sled or ski bike. The slopes are gentle and not very demanding; night rides under the starry sky are particularly atmospheric. Weather-related changes are also possible here.

The “Goms pleasure route” adds a culinary option: at selected restaurants, guests can put together their own three-course menu of starter, main course and dessert. Participating establishments and service arrangements may vary. Alongside train and trail experiences, regional restaurant stops are therefore another option when planning your trip.
