Chapels dating back several centuries, centuries-old larches and trails in a forested setting give Les Mayens-De-Sion a character that can be explored through both its history and its activities. Two questions can help with planning your trip: Which architectural history interests you, and which aspect of the area would you like to focus on?

Tourism history and chapels

Tourism began to develop in Les Mayens-De-Sion in the second half of the 19th century and was initially limited to summer. The de Torrenté family built the first hotel in 1880. By around 1900, the area had five hotels and about 250 beds. These figures tell the story of early tourism that grew significantly over the course of just a few decades.

The chapels also give the area a long historical perspective. The Chapelle de la Visitation was built in 1680 and dedicated to the Visitation of the Virgin Mary. The Chapelle Notre-Dame du Bon Conseil dates from 1770, and the Chapelle Sainte-Anne from 1878. The Protestant Chapel was built in 1901 and is considered the canton’s oldest Reformed place of worship. Together, these buildings span the period from the late 17th to the early 20th century.

The history of the Chapelle de la Visitation also includes a change in its stewardship: in 2000, the Bourgeoisie de Sion took over its patronage and carried out extensive restoration and renovation work. Masses are held in the chapel on Saturdays in July and August; check the current schedule before your trip. Historic chalets and chapels set in the woods also contribute to Les Mayens-De-Sion’s historic character.

Woods, trails and activities

Centuries-old larches are part of the landscape. The forested surroundings have an extensive network of hiking and mountain biking trails. One specific trail follows the Bisse de Vex from Veysonnaz to Les Mayens-De-Sion: it is shady and pleasant, and considered suitable for families with strollers. As current trail conditions are important for planning, it is advisable to check them shortly before setting out.

There are two tennis courts in Les Mayens des Plans, at Place des Fêtes. If you plan to play tennis, check in advance whether the courts will be available during your visit. Alongside architectural history and trails, the courts offer another possible focus for your stay.

Location and finding accommodation

Les Mayens-De-Sion is located at an altitude of 1,200 metres above the Rhône Valley, about five kilometres below Veysonnaz in the direction of Sion. Sion, a bishop’s town with an attractive old town, is nearby. This location combines the mountain resort’s distinctive character with a nearby urban point of reference, without conflating the two.

If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Les Mayens-De-Sion, it is best to choose a focus first: are you particularly interested in the chapels and historic chalets, the forested surroundings and their trails, or tennis in Les Mayens des Plans?
