Rothwald combines a small ski area with snowshoe trails and hikes through larch forest. The village belongs to the municipality of Ried-Brig in the canton of Valais. The Rothwald Wasenalp ski area is located at the Simplon Pass in the Brig/Aletsch region. This gives you different options when planning your trip: slopes and freeride opportunities on the one hand, and trails through wooded terrain and to a mountain lake on the other. Conditions vary depending on the activity and season.

Slopes and Freeride Opportunities

Rothwald/Wasenalp is a small ski area with 25 km of slopes and two ski lifts. Slope and lift details can vary by season. In addition to groomed slopes, there are numerous freeride opportunities; whether they are accessible depends on snow and safety conditions. If skiing is the main focus of your trip, take this into account when planning.

The ski area extends from 1,750 m in the valley to 2,270 m at higher elevations. A drag lift runs from 1,750 m above sea level to 2,220 m above sea level, covering an elevation difference of 479 m. These figures describe different areas: the extent of the ski area and the elevation profile of this lift. This makes it easier to distinguish the area shown on the map from the specific lift route.

Snowshoe Trails and Hikes

The Rothwald Panorama Trail snowshoe route passes through wooded terrain and offers panoramic views of the Ganter Valley; visibility depends on the weather. This trail has a clear access requirement: it can only be used when the Seepiste is open. The Wasenalp–Hohliecht snowshoe trail leads into an old larch forest. Some of the larch trees along the trail are up to 600 years old. Visitors interested in ancient trees will find a different focus here than on the Panorama Trail, which looks out over the valley.

The Rothwald–Wasmerseeli circular hike includes a short detour to the mountain lake. In summer, Wasmerseeli offers tired hikers a chance to cool off; seasonal access depends on the weather, and the detour is also subject to local trail conditions. There is also a fire pit along the circular hike where visitors can barbecue. Check its condition before your visit.

Another option is the hut hike from BortelhĂĽtte to the Simplon Pass. It is 11.35 km long, rated moderate and takes about 3 hours and 55 minutes. The route passes through impressive larch forests near Rothwald/Wasenalp; conditions depend on the weather. This route is distinct from the high-altitude trail from Rosswald to Rothwald, on which Bortel Hut is a stop along the way.
