In Eggerberg, scenic trails above the Rhône Valley meet traces of village history and everyday life. Two themes provide a helpful guide for planning: the trails along the southern Lötschberg ramp and the village’s historic sites and collections.

Getting There and the Landscape

Eggerberg can be reached by car, PostBus and the Lötschberger (BLS); the municipality has an unstaffed BLS railway station. Check the timetables before your journey. This will help you plan your arrival using the mode of transport that suits your stay.

The municipality stretches across sunny slopes, pastures and forests and is part of the Pfyn-Finges Nature Park. Walking and hiking trails run along the southern Lötschberg ramp and through sunny hillside areas with views into the Rhône Valley. A special viewpoint is the Finnen alpine pasture above Eggerberg: from there, views extend down into the Rhône Valley, up to Goms and across to the Mischabel group.

The southern Lötschberg ramp extends for around 27 kilometres from Hohtenn railway station via Eggerberg to Brig. Individual sections may be affected by seasonal conditions. Another specific hiking option is the “Life Elixir Air” themed trail, which runs from Mund along the northern flank of the Rhône Valley to Eggerberg above Visp; it is seven kilometres long. Check local trail conditions before setting out. The 2011 cantonal trail description mentions five educational panels about the atmosphere and its delicate balance, air and health, global warming, and air pollution. The panel content may change.

Village History and Special Places

The Trielstadel Museum in the village centre of Mühlackern houses a wooden fruit and grape press, known as a Triel, dating from 1750. The museum also shows films about local crafts, as well as selected documented tools and materials from former farming life. Archaeological finds from caves within the municipality include Late Bronze Age funerary urns, pots and bronze tools. Exhibition content may be updated.

Historical traces are also part of the village landscape beyond the museum. Two resin kilns in the Schmittuwald are in remarkably good condition. Eggerberg’s parish church was built in 1863 in Mühlackern, on the site of the former St. Joseph’s Chapel. Eggerberg was first mentioned in 1307 under the name “Ecun”; chapels and historic buildings reflect village life.

A fire service ceremony honouring its patron saint, St. Agatha, is held every year at the Chapel of St. Agatha in Eggen. Regular Sunday services take place at the Chapel of Our Lady in Finnen in summer. Visitors wishing to see the historic houses in Finnen can do so as part of a guided village tour. A guided tour of Eggerberg with storytelling about local legends is intended for visitor groups and includes a museum visit, an aperitif and a fondue get-together afterwards; confirm the booking details before your journey.

Local Tradition

The local food culture includes Valais rye bread baked by the Geteilschaft Backhaus Grabo. Baking days take place mainly in spring and autumn. When choosing a stay in Eggerberg, the viewpoints, trails and historic sites offer different points of focus, which you can weigh according to your own travel interests.
