Amsteg lies in the last flat section of the Reuss Valley, before the terrain rises towards the Gotthard massif. The village is about one kilometre south of Silenen, at an elevation of approximately 524 m above sea level, and has a compact village centre. It lies directly at the entrance to the Maderanertal. The village brings together the valley floor, mountain scenery and the history of the Gotthard Pass route.

Mountain excursion and hiking trails

The Amsteg–Arnisee cable car takes six minutes to travel from Amsteg to Vorderarni. From the cable car’s arrival point, it takes about 30 minutes on foot to reach the Vorderarni viewpoint. This walking time is an estimate and may vary depending on conditions. When planning your day, treat the cable car ride and walk as two separate legs. Check the cable car’s current operating status before travelling.

Amsteg is a starting point for the Gottardo Hiking Trail, which passes through the village between Gurtnellen and Silenen. Amsteg can be reached from Göschenen or Altdorf by bus operated by AUTO AG URI. If you are travelling by bus, check the current timetables in advance.

The surrounding area

The municipality of Silenen comprises the three villages of Silenen, Amsteg and Bristen. There are four cable cars in the municipality, providing access to a mountain hiking area with numerous routes leading to mountain lakes. This information applies to the municipality; the specifically named Amsteg–Arnisee cable car runs from Amsteg to Vorderarni. The Maderanertal lies in the wider area around Amsteg. It is considered peaceful and is associated with a traditional pack-trail as well as the history of travel over the Gotthard.

Power station and landscape

The SBB hydroelectric power station is the dominant structure in Amsteg’s landscape. Its striking 400-metre-long pipes descend into the valley and have been preserved as historic features. For groups, SBB offers guided tours of the Amsteg hydroelectric power station during the day from Monday to Friday, by prior arrangement. If you are considering such a tour, check the booking conditions again before travelling.

Gotthard history and buildings

Amsteg owes its origins to its location on the Gotthard Pass route. Until the end of the 18th century, the village served as a stopping point for muleteers, or pack-animal handlers. The parish church in Amsteg was built in 1859/60 and contains four ceiling paintings in the late Nazarene style. The energieUri Arena offers another option for larger sporting events: its triple sports hall can be hired for such events.

Plan around different interests

The options differ in how they need to be planned: the mountain excursion includes a separate walk to the viewpoint, the Gottardo Hiking Trail is a route between several villages, and the power station tour is a group activity that must be arranged in advance. When considering Amsteg as a place to stay, you can therefore treat mountain scenery, the trail route and the history of technology as distinct focuses for your trip.
