Two Torba buildings standing close together give Moghegno an unusual connection to the rural architectural history of Vallemaggia. The village is also home to church art and the Bagnadüü-Mülitt chestnut landscape. The difference between the trails is also worth noting when planning: the Moghegno e la Grà themed trail runs through the lanes; the nature trail along the Maggia starts in Someo and continues to Moghegno.

Moghegno is a village and district of the municipality of Maggia in the canton of Ticino, in the Vallemaggia district. It lies at about 317 metres above sea level on the right bank of the Maggia River, between Pizzo Peloso to the south-southwest and Madom da Sgióf to the northeast.

Torbe and Village History

The Torba di Moghegno is located in the village centre and was built in the mid-15th century. It was restored from 2004 to 2005 under the coordination and supervision of APAV. Dendrochronological studies date both Torba buildings in Moghegno to the period from 1460 to 1470. This more precise date range supplements the broader dating of the Torba in the village centre. The fact that the two buildings stand close together is unusual in the lower valley: such buildings were mainly adopted by mountain communities.

The historic village centre itself also tells of several building phases. Numerous buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries have been preserved there. The Torbe and the older houses thus provide different points of reference for the village’s architectural history.

Church Art and Architecture

The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta brings together several historical layers. Its original section dates from before 1597; the church was remodelled towards the end of the 17th century. The bell tower is dated to 1780, stands 46 metres high and is considered the tallest in Vallemaggia.

The furnishings can also be described through specific details: the church contains 15 copper medallions painted by Giovanni Antonio Vanoni in 1842. They depict the Mysteries of the Holy Rosary. The high altar is made of polychrome marble, and the balustrades of black marble; both date from the mid-18th century. The tower, medallions and marble work each offer a different perspective on the history of the parish church.

Bagnadüü-Mülitt: Chestnut Landscape and Mills

Bagnadüü-Mülitt is a restored chestnut landscape covering about 2.3 hectares. Of the seven mills found there, two have been restored; one is operational with its original equipment. The area lies a few hundred metres above the road to Lodano. You can reach it in ten minutes on foot from the last inhabited houses.

The Grà, a facility for drying chestnuts, connects the landscape with local food culture. At the initiative of the Associazione Artigiani di Valmaggia, the loading and unloading of a Grà continues to take place annually; you should confirm the specific dates locally. Some of the dried chestnuts were ground into flour for a type of polenta or for chestnut bread. This use is part of Moghegno’s historic chestnut tradition.

Trails Through the Lanes and Along the Maggia

The Moghegno e la Grà themed trail runs through Moghegno’s narrow lanes. From Locarno, it can be reached by bus B 315 towards Cavergno, getting off at the Aurigeno-Moghegno stop. Check the connection again before your trip.

A different route description applies to the Sentiero naturalistico lungo le golene del fiume Maggia circular trail: it starts at the footbridge in Someo and runs mostly on level ground along the right bank of the Maggia to Moghegno. The two trails therefore differ clearly in their starting points and routes: one focuses on the village lanes, while the other is a mostly level riverside trail that starts in Someo. When planning, you can choose the trail type and starting point that best suit your visit.
