Cresciano is a village in the municipality of Riviera and the Riviera district in the Swiss canton of Ticino. It lies at 259 m above sea level; elevations range from 244 to 2,726 m above sea level. Forest, rock and architectural history shape the area’s different themes: the Valle di Cresciano forest reserve covers almost the entire valley, bouldering centres on granite or gneiss blocks, and the Church of San Vincenzo brings together traces from different periods.

Valle di Cresciano Forest Reserve

The forest reserve encompasses a variety of well-preserved habitats that provide a home to numerous plant, animal and fungal species. It covers almost the entire valley, with the exception of the treeless alpine belt and some agricultural areas. To help visitors find their way around the reserve, paths have been maintained, signposts installed and bridges restored. This makes the reserve accessible on foot.

Sentiero dei Grandi Alberi

The Sentiero dei Grandi Alberi is a circular trail with two restored bridges. Its loop and the two bridges are defining features of this named trail.

Bouldering on Granite and Gneiss

Bouldering in Cresciano takes place on high-quality granite or gneiss blocks. Climbing styles range from slabs and overhangs to walls with small edges. The best time for climbing is from September to April. Dreamtime is also part of the area’s history: the symbolic grade of 8c was first achieved on Dreamtime, and the problem was later repeated at 8b+. This brought the name Cresciano to prominence beyond the climbing community.

Canyoning Boggera pro

Another activity is the Canyoning Boggera pro tour. The meeting point is at a base in Cresciano. The tour includes longer, more athletic sections and impressive abseils; jumps and slides are optional when conditions are suitable. Compared with bouldering, the focus here is on the longer, more athletic sections and the abseils.

Church of San Vincenzo

The Church of San Vincenzo is a 16th-century building that was remodelled later. Its distinctive bell tower is the only surviving evidence of its ancient Romanesque origins. Its architectural history therefore reflects different periods: the tower points to its Romanesque origins, while the later remodelling represents another layer. A 17th-century painting is located in the right-hand chapel. It depicts Saint John the Evangelist and Saint Anthony the Hermit. The architectural history and the specific chapel painting thus offer distinct cultural points of interest.

If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Cresciano, the recommended climbing season from September to April can help guide your choice of dates if bouldering is your main focus. The forest reserve, canyoning and architectural history offer other themes to explore.
