Maglio di Colla combines local cultural heritage with cycling routes and hiking trails in the Val Colla. A mountain bike loop starts and ends in the village; bus connections and other routes offer additional planning options.

Between Cultural Heritage and Valley

The old electric power station in Maglio di Colla is recognised as a cultural asset of local importance. The Val Colla provides a broader landscape setting: it is included in the Federal Inventory of Landscapes and Natural Monuments of National Importance as well as in the cantonal zone of natural interest. From Monte Gazzirola, the valley follows the Cassarate River for about ten kilometres. This brings a specific historical and cultural reference together with a wider landscape perspective when planning your trip.

Cycling Routes with Different Starting Points

The Gazzirola mountain bike loop starts in Maglio di Colla and returns there. Its route connects the village with Certara, San Lucio, the Rifugio Garzirola, Gazzirola, Alpe Pietrarossa and Colla. The loop is listed as 22 kilometres long, with 1,338 metres of elevation gain. From the Gazzirola route, views extend across the forests of the Val Colla and the Lombard Prealps; on a clear day, the Valais Alps and Monte Rosa are also visible.

The cycling tour to Monte Roveraccio goes via Tesserete, Maglio di Colla, Monte Roveraccio, Sonvico, Cadro and Lugano-Cornaredo. In the heart of the Val Colla, it reaches a viewpoint with a 360-degree panorama. The route area is characterised by livestock farming and chestnut groves; the route also follows the Cassarate through lush forest to Sonvico. Typical grotto restaurants along the further route in the Madonna d’Arla area offer places to stop. As food service and opening hours may vary, check in advance if you plan to take a break there.

Another cycling tour, the Tour della Val Colla, starts between Canobbio and Tesserete on a wooded former railway track. It is rated difficult; the listed elevation gain is 890 metres and the duration is 3 hours and 10 minutes. The Gazzirola loop and this tour therefore offer different starting points and specified planning details. The San Lucio–Denti della Vecchia mountain bike route is currently listed as closed because it passes through an inaccessible area. Check its current status before including it in your plans.

On Foot and by PostBus

The trail from Maglio di Colla to Tesserete is considered a scenic, moderate hike. It runs mainly along trails and through wooded or natural areas; a short section is paved. The different trail surfaces are a practical point to consider when preparing. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

PostBus route 447 runs between Tesserete, Maglio di Colla and Sonvico. To travel between the Val Colla and Lugano, you need to change between PostBus and ARL services in Tesserete. If you are coordinating your overnight stay and day trips, include this change in your plans and check departure times before travelling.

Planning Around Event Dates

The Carnevale El Coleta took place in Maglio di Colla on 26 and 27 January 2024 and on 23 and 24 January 2026. If you are planning to travel for the event, check whether a future date has been scheduled. This keeps your plans tied to specific event dates instead of assuming the event will recur based on past editions.
