Castelrotto combines a compact rural village centre with historic churches, a short themed hike and winemaking. Planning requirements vary: Tracce d’Uomo is an easy circular route with an approximate duration; a tour of the Vallombrosa wine cellars is arranged by appointment only. Before setting out on the hike, check the latest trail conditions, and confirm the tour date before you arrive.

The village centre and churches as cultural highlights

The compact rural village centre is characterised by stately bourgeois residences. Villa Orizzonte is considered a cultural asset of local importance. San Nazaro in Croglio, in the village of Castelrotto, was first mentioned in 1301; it acquired its present form in the mid-17th century. The bell tower dates from 1677. Inside, the Baroque high altar, with 18th-century stucco and marble, adds another historical touch. San Bartolomeo in Castelrotto has Romanesque origins. The church also contains a rare depiction of the Coronation of the Virgin Mary, discovered in 1945.

The village’s history goes back further: a castle or tower once stood on the site of today’s settlement. According to tradition, the village’s name derives from it; “Castrum Ruptum” was first documented in 1591. Castelrotto became an independent parish in 1582, and Croglio, Biogno and Beride have belonged to it ever since. A culture-focused stay brings together architectural history, art and local tradition.

Tracce d’Uomo and local trails

Tracce d’Uomo is an easy circular route covering 3.4 kilometres, with a duration of about 1 hour and 5 minutes. The route connects the picturesque villages of Castelrotto and Beride, combining culture, history and nature. Along the way, hikers can see buildings and relics that document aspects of the local population’s former way of life. The route can therefore be appreciated for more than its distance and duration: its distinctive feature is the insight it offers into traces of everyday life in the past. The trail is accessible by PostBus. As trail conditions and public transport connections can change, check both before setting out.

While the Tracce d’Uomo circular route connects Castelrotto and Beride, part of the Via della Vite in the nearby area heads towards Ponte Tresa and Castelrotto; via Biogno, the route continues to Curio.

Winemaking at Vallombrosa

The Wine & Art Relais Vallombrosa lies in the heart of Castelrotto’s vineyards. The estate covers a total of 10 hectares, more than 5 of which are used for viticulture. These figures may change over time. Giovanni Rossi planted the first Merlot vines there in 1908. The range includes red, white and rosé wines, sparkling wines, grappa and honey; Vallombrosa also offers maize for polenta. The selection may change. A tour of the wine production cellars, which are a few kilometres away, can be arranged by appointment. Confirm the arrangements before your trip.
