Castro offers an impressive view up the Blenio Valley towards Olivone. The village lies 651 metres above sea level and is a hamlet in the municipality of Acquarossa, in the Blenio district of the Canton of Ticino. The destination can be explored through two themes: cultural sites such as the Chiesa di San Giorgio and the Genucchi Atelier, and two mountain bike routes that reach or cross the Castro plain. The valley view and the route details provide different points of reference: one scenic, the others useful for planning a specific ride.

Churches and Places of Worship

The Chiesa di San Giorgio was founded in 1205. The parish church building stands outside the village centre, was built in 1867 and is used only occasionally. The founding year and the year of construction describe different points in time. A visit may depend on arrangements with the parish, so please coordinate with it in advance.

Mass is held once a month at the Oratorio di Sant’Antonio da Padova. If you would like to include Mass in your travel plans, check the parish’s information in advance.

Art and Local Connections

Giovanni Genucchi, an artist and sculptor, lived in Castro for many years. His atelier preserves plaster works, sculptures, drawings and letters, as well as natural materials such as wood and stones collected in nature from the artist’s creative environment. From outside, you can view works by Giovanni Genucchi through horizontal openings at three different positions; this viewing opportunity may change.

The Casa dei Landfogti is located at Via Sant’Antonio 9 in Castro. Il Mulino di Castro is also a cultural site of interest in Castro.

Mountain Biking

The BlenioBike 21 – Ponto Valentino mountain bike route is 17.6 kilometres long, with 818 metres of elevation gain, and is listed as taking 2 hours and 25 minutes. The duration helps you estimate the time required, while the elevation gain adds information about the climb to the route length. On the way back to Acquarossa, the route follows a side road through the Castro plain. The description and route may change; check trail conditions before setting out.

From Ponto Valentino, the BlenioBike 19 – San Carlo reaches the Castro plain via an easy mule track. It then crosses the Brenno and heads south along the old Satro gravel road. The description and route for this ride may also be updated; check conditions before setting out.

The two routes can be compared using different key details: for route 21, the main points are distance, elevation gain and duration; route 19 is defined by its mule track, Brenno crossing and Satro road.
