Torre lies at the beginning of the upper Blenio Valley and is a hamlet in the municipality of Blenio in the canton of Ticino. The settlement is situated at an altitude of 760 to 768 metres above sea level. Two different perspectives can help with planning a trip: the Sentiero storico numero 4 as a hike lasting several hours, and the local evidence of church, castle, and industrial history. This makes it possible to view Torre as a destination for a hike or for a stay focused on regional history.

The Sentiero storico numero 4

The Sentiero storico numero 4 runs from Acquarossa to Olivone, mainly along the lower path on the left bank of the Brenno River. At 12.6 kilometres, with a stated duration of 4 hours and 5 minutes, it should be planned as a hike lasting several hours. The route is described as difficult. Villa Pagani is one of the sights along the way in Torre.

A brown trail marker, along with orientation and thematic signs, is provided to help with navigation. As trail conditions and signage can change, check these details before setting out. The route length, estimated time, and stated difficulty help you treat the hike as an activity in its own right rather than as a short detour.

Oratories and Architectural History

The Oratorio di San Salvatore stands on Ingerio Hill, on the site of a former medieval castle. It was first mentioned in 1430. Its architectural features include a rafter roof and a choir with a groin vault: the rafter roof refers to the roof structure, while the groin vault describes the type of vault in the choir. The oratory also contains 16th-century frescoes by Giovanni Battista Tarilli.

Another religious building is the Oratorio di Ingerio. Dating from 1759, it is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin of Grace. It contains a restored 16th-century fresco of the Madonna in Trono. If you plan a visit, check access and the condition of the fresco on site. The present-day church also has its own architectural history: it was rebuilt in 1732 after the previous church building was destroyed by fire.

A Romanesque bell tower dating from the 12th century stands over 30 metres tall and has five storeys. Since 1931, it has been protected as a cultural asset of cantonal importance. Its height, storeys, and long history offer a different way to experience Torre from its frescoes and oratories: here, the focus is on a single, clearly defined building.

Castles, Pacts, and Industry

Castel Curterio was used to control and defend the transit route to the Lukmanier Pass. The course of the walls of the former fortification was uncovered in 1951. The place name Torre is also associated with Curtero Castle, which replaced the destroyed Serravalle Castle after the Battle of Legnano. These historical connections lead from the local history of fortifications to the region’s transport routes and political conflicts.

The Pact of Torre was signed in Torre in February 1182. The inhabitants of Blenio, Leventina, and Riviera joined forces against Alcherio da Torre. Another historical trace points to industry: the Fabrique de Chocolat Cima was established in 1903 as the first industry in the Blenio Valley. Together, these details convey different historical periods without requiring a single building or theme to define the entire stay.
