Lommis lies in the Lauchetal valley; the political municipality comprises the three villages of Lommis, Weingarten and Kalthäusern. Its landscape, trails and local history offer different starting points for a stay. The striking Immenberg and the marshland areas on the valley floor shape the area, as do the opportunities for hiking, cycling and flying.

Protected Landscape on Immenberg

The southern slope of the striking Immenberg is listed in the Federal Inventory of Protected Areas as a landscape and natural monument of national importance. Larger, contiguous marshland areas on the valley floor are protected. Lommis is therefore home to two different protected landscape areas: the slope of Immenberg and the marshland in the valley. They provide a fitting setting if you would like to focus on nature and landscape when planning your trip.

Hiking Trails and Cycling Tour

The Lommis leisure maps include six hiking routes with elevation profiles and approximate times. This lets you get a rough idea of the elevation changes and expected time required in advance. Check the route details before setting off. The municipality also has many well-maintained, easy-to-walk hiking trails and farm tracks that cross the area. The map also shows interesting and noteworthy points and routes in and around the municipality; a leisure map has been available since summer 2013.

There is also a named option for a cycling tour: the “Around Immenberg” route is offered in Lommis. The hiking routes and cycling tour offer different focuses for planning. The leisure map provides a shared point of reference, without requiring you to combine the two activities into a single route.

Airfield and Flying Experiences

Lommis Airfield has a grass runway measuring 615 metres long and 25 metres wide, for smaller, mostly single-engine aircraft. Check the operating status before visiting. On an introductory flight, visitors can sit at the controls; passengers can take a scenic flight. These are two different ways to experience the airfield. Check booking and operating conditions in advance for an introductory flight; for scenic flights, check availability.

Getting Here and Rail Connections

Lommis has a PostBus connection to the rail stations at Affeltrangen-Tobel, served by Thurbo, and Frauenfeld, served by SBB. When planning your accommodation and journey, this connection helps you take the listed rail stations into account. Check the timetable before travelling so your plans match the current services. The two connections are served by different rail operators: Thurbo in Affeltrangen-Tobel and SBB in Frauenfeld.

St. James’ Church and Early References

St. James’ Church in Lommis is around 800 years old and is one of the oldest churches in the canton. The town’s history also goes back a long way: Lommis was first mentioned in 824. Records from 854 refer to properties from the March of Lommis owned by the Abbey of St. Gall. The two dates represent different historical references—the first mention of the town and later records concerning properties. A visit to the church can therefore be combined with a look at Lommis’ early history.
