The lakeshore, outdoor activities and local history give a stay in Mols several different focal points. The Walensee play experience on the natural shore of Lake Molser, the small pebble beach at Strandbad Mols and the Walenstadt–Raischibe–Mols hike offer specific ways to explore them. Mols is a village in the municipality of Quarten in the canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland. If you are looking for accommodation for your stay, you can first consider whether a play area, beach, hike or local history should shape your days.

Play experience on the shore of Lake Molser

The Walensee play experience includes a play oasis with a heron slide, seagull swing, frog seesaw and water-lily balancing path. The equipment offers different kinds of movement: sliding, swinging, seesawing and balancing. The play experience also includes the large playground at Strandbad Mols. Large trees provide shade for the play area on the shore of Lake Molser. Several play features are thus brought together in a named lakeside experience. The lido complements this focus with its small pebble beach; play and beach offer different ways to enjoy a stay by the lake.

Beach and getting your bearings

Strandbad Mols has a small pebble beach. Mols beach is freely accessible at all times; as access arrangements may change, check the latest information before your visit. Mols railway station is about 250 metres west of the beach. The Mols boat landing is also about 250 metres west of the beach. Both distances are approximate and each refers to the beach, not to the distance between the railway station and the boat landing. You therefore have two separate reference points for finding your way to the lakeshore.

A hike with views of Lake Walen

The Walenstadt–Raischibe–Mols hike offers a different perspective. The route passes through the forest and offers beautiful views of Walenstadt and Lake Walen. After the turnoff towards Mols, the path descends steadily to Mols and the shores of Lake Walen. The forest section, views and descent define this hiking focus; the play area and lido offer a different lakeside experience. The lakeside settings also differ: the play experience is on Lake Molser, while the hike offers views of Lake Walen and leads to its shore.

Church history in several stages

Local history also offers clearly dated milestones. Mols is mentioned in an alpine pasture charter in 1178; the first grazing regulations were established here in 1475. The present-day parish church is a landmark in the village centre. Earlier milestones in the church’s history include the first chapel, built in 1725, and separation from Walenstadt church: in 1787, Mols became independent and formed its own parish. The first parish church was consecrated on 11 November 1821. Bishop Carl Johann Greith of St. Gallen consecrated the present-day parish church on 24 October 1865. The dates can be read in two strands: the alpine pasture charter and grazing regulations tell the story of the village’s earlier history, while the years 1725 to 1865 mark stages in its church development.
