Thal Nature Park is shaped by the Jura mountain chain and the DĂĽnnerntal, Guldental and Augstbachtal river valleys. The Thal district is in the canton of Solothurn, and its main town is Balsthal. In 2009, the district was recognised as a regional nature park of national importance. Its landscape and natural history give Thal a distinctive character, reflected in its gorges, forests, pastures and cultural discoveries.

Flower-rich hay meadows and species-rich summer pastures provide habitats for numerous orchid species. The open pine and beech forests are also home to a high diversity of species, including rare ones. The history of this natural environment goes back further: during the ice ages, the Jura Heights remained ice-free and offered refuge to Arctic-alpine animal and plant species. In the warmer periods that followed, warmth-loving species arrived while the Jura was still free of forests. The landscape’s diversity can thus also be understood as the result of different climatic periods.

Gorge Trails and Outdoor Discoveries

The Wolf Gorge runs through a cantonal forest reserve. Its path winds through a narrow gorge between high rock walls, where caves and water-worn hollows can be seen. Over a distance of just under one and a half kilometres, the route follows the Wolfsbach stream and climbs 300 metres. The Herbetswil Wolfsschlucht bus stop is right at the trailhead. There is signposted parking in the centre of Herbetswil, with additional parking available in Welschenrohr. Check transport and parking information before setting out.

The Holzweg Thal offers another way to experience the connection between nature and design: it brings together art, forest and wood as a natural material in a playful, themed hiking experience. Those particularly interested in architecture may want to consider the one-day Three Castles hike, which links the historic sites of Alt-Falkenstein, Alt-Bechburg and Neu-Falkenstein. The gorge trail, Holzweg and castle hike each offer a different focus, so you need not limit yourself to just one way of exploring the area.

Neu-Falkenstein: Castle Ruins and History

The ruins of Neu-Falkenstein Castle are open year-round and offer views of Thal Nature Park, as well as barbecue and fire-pit areas. For information about weather or maintenance, it is worth checking local access notices. The castle was probably built in the early 12th century. In the 13th and 14th centuries, it served as a fiefdom seat for the Counts of Falkenstein and Bechburg. The ruins combine an on-site visit with several centuries of history.

The Tinu von Neu-Falkenstein themed trail shares interesting facts about the ruins and the Middle Ages. At seven stops, Tinu appears on your smartphone; check that this digital offering is available before your visit. The Alt-Falkenstein Museum offers another focus on history and everyday life. Its permanent exhibition includes fossils, archaeological finds from excavations, weapons and military memorabilia, ceramics, combs, embroidery, and a domestic-life exhibition. The museum is accessible on foot only; the climb from Balsthal ThalbrĂĽcke takes about 15 minutes.

Crafts and Collections

At the Matzendorf Ceramics Museum, you can discover the 200-year tradition of the Matzendorf ceramics workshop and the Aedermannsdorf pottery factory. The museum is open on the first Sunday of each month from 2:00 to 4:00 pm; visits at other times can be arranged by appointment. As opening arrangements may change, it is advisable to check before travelling.

The uhrundzeit Museum in Welschenrohr is located in the former TECHNOS watch factory. Its two-storey exhibition showcases more than 250 years of watchmaking in Thal, as well as examples from well over 16 companies originally based there. In the museum workshop, visitors can watch a watchmaker at work; this may depend on staffing and visitor arrangements. Those interested in agriculture can visit the MOTRAC Museum in Welschenrohr, which houses restored Motrac tractors, Motrac mowers, mounted implements and other agricultural equipment. Opening hours may vary. The historic mill in Ramiswil also tells the story of an older craft: built in the 16th century, it features a Renaissance façade and old milling equipment.
