Wisen lies in a valley between Wisenberg and Fluehberg, in a rural setting far from the noise of the city. Fluehberg is the striking landmark on the southern side of the village; to the north, the gentler Wisenberg is nestled in the landscape. Wisen is part of the BLN site “Aargauer and Eastern Solothurn Folded Jura,” a landscape of national importance. The two ridges give the surrounding area distinct contours and provide a good starting point for understanding Wisen as a landscape and hiking destination.

Hiking around Wisen

The “Over Froburg” hiking route passes through Wisen and then continues to Wisenberg. It is accessible by the S9 from Läufelfingen to Olten, as well as towards Sissach and Basel. Check the timetable before travelling to make sure your journey suits your hike.

There are walking and forest trails around Wisenberg that attract walkers and hikers. The Wisenberg Tower is located near Wisen, outside the municipal boundary. It stands at over 1,000 metres above sea level, is 24.5 metres high and lies on an official hiking trail. From the tower, panoramic views extend across Basel-Landschaft, the Homburg Valley and the Central Plateau. This makes it possible to combine the views with a specific destination in the area, without attributing the tower to the municipality of Wisen.

Another option is the Wisenberg circular hike: it leads from Bad Ramsach over Wisenberg and back to Bad Ramsach, and is 4.29 kilometres long. Check the latest trail and route details before setting out, as information and routes may change.

Church and historic traces

St. Josef Church in Wisen was built in 1837. At the main entrance, it sits almost two metres below street level—a distinctive feature of its location. New construction work planned in 1951 was never carried out; the old church was subsequently placed under heritage protection. This building history is also part of the village’s character: the planned replacement did not go ahead, and the older church was preserved as a protected building.

Wisen’s cultural heritage also includes the Bronze Age settlement of Moosfeld. Together with St. Josef Church, it shows how far back the village’s historical roots extend: from a prehistoric settlement to a 19th-century church. The two examples offer different insights into Wisen’s history, without representing the same era or the same kind of site.

Farm shop and local offerings

The Zwillmatthof farm shop is one kilometre outside the village and sells pork, veal and beef directly from the farm. The product range may change; check before visiting. At Rütihof in Wisen, a mixed pack of Natura-Beef is sold directly from the farm. Check availability before your visit. The Gasthof Löwen in Wisen offers homemade loaves and braided breads. These food offerings range from farm-gate sales to items available at an inn.

Which hike suits your plans?

When choosing your accommodation, you can also consider which type of hike you would like to shape your stay. The circular hike returns to Bad Ramsach; “Over Froburg” passes through Wisen and then continues to Wisenberg. The difference lies in the route and the stated starting and return points. If you would like to include Wisen itself in your hike, the “Over Froburg” route is the relevant option; for a circular hike that returns to Bad Ramsach, the Wisenberg circular hike is described.
