A picnic area in the Binnbach nature reserve, Witterswil Forest and a village fountain with four spouts all flowing at the same time give you specific points of reference for a stay in Witterswil. There is also a tram connection to Basel city centre, with the journey stated as taking around 25 minutes. The village can thus be explored through its natural surroundings and history, as well as its connection to Basel.

Location between the Leimental Valley and the Jura

Witterswil is a municipality in the Dorneck district of the canton of Solothurn, Switzerland. The village is a clustered settlement in a broad hollow at the northern foot of the Jura, in the upper Leimental Valley and near the French border. The landscape lies in a transition zone between the gently rolling hills of the Sundgau and the folded Mesozoic rock layers of the northern Jura.

Near the old village centre, a slight depression opens eastwards towards Ettingen. The Marchbach drains it into the Birsig. To the south, the terrain rises steeply along the slope of Witterswiler Berg; at 500 metres above sea level, this is the highest point in the municipality. Fields and Witterswil Forest surround the village. Walking, sports and spending time in nature are all options for local recreation.

There is a picnic area in the Binnbach nature reserve. The Forsthaus forest hut has a barbecue area and invites visitors to relax and spend time together. If you would like to visit the forest hut, it is advisable to check the current access conditions in advance, as access rules may change.

Village Fountain and History

In Oberdorf stands the natural stone fountain known as «auf dem Spielhof». It dates from the 19th century and was restored in 2010. All four of its spouts pour water at the same time—a distinctive architectural feature of the village. Witterswil’s history also goes back a long way: since the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the lordship of Rotberg, which for a long time held the status of a free imperial fief. As a result, Witterswil was considered one of the seven free imperial villages on Blauen.

Following the completion of restoration work, Witterswil Church once again welcomes visitors for prayer, quiet reflection and fellowship. For current service times, check the parish announcements.

Festivals and Village Life

The Dorfladenfest is held every year in August as a two-day village festival; the dates may vary from year to year. The 2025 edition celebrated its 25th anniversary. At the time, treats from FIDI-Burger and Landhuus were on offer, along with raclette and a cake buffet.

Carnival, whose dates vary each year, is also part of Witterswil’s traditions. The Banntag, organised by the citizens’ community, is a fixture of village life. Together, these events showcase different sides of the village: the Dorfladenfest is described as a two-day event in August, while Carnival and the Banntag each have their own place in local tradition.

Take the Tram to Basel

Witterswil is around nine kilometres south-southwest of Basel as the crow flies. The tram takes around 25 minutes to reach Basel city centre. The straight-line distance helps put the location in perspective, while the approximate tram journey time provides a different point of reference. Actual journey times may vary depending on the connection and traffic conditions. It is therefore worth checking the current service for your specific travel date.

When looking for a hotel in Witterswil, consider what matters most to you: would you like your stay to focus mainly on walks, nature and village history, or is the tram connection to Basel city centre an important part of your plans? The location and journey-time information answer different questions and can help you make a clearer choice about where to stay.
