Thayngen is a village and municipality in the canton of Schaffhausen, Switzerland. There are various things to discover during your stay: prehistoric sites and hiking trails, regional museum collections, and a nature reserve of national importance. The attractions offer different highlights—from a signposted circular route and exhibitions to habitats for wildlife.
Stone Age Trail and pile-dwelling history
The Stone Age Trail starts at the Kesslerloch archaeological site west of Thayngen railway station; the route is signposted from the station. The circular trail is 8.4 kilometres long and takes about 2 hours and 7 minutes. The distance and approximate duration can help you fit the tour into your day’s plans. Check for any temporary access restrictions before setting out.
Thayngen-Weier is also part of the area’s prehistoric history: since 2011, the settlement has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps”. It has three archaeological settlement layers, dated to approximately 3800–3600 BC and associated with the Pfyn culture. When planning your trip, you can therefore combine two distinct aspects: the trail at Kesslerloch and the archaeological context of the Weier settlement.
On the hike from Thayngen to Dörflingen, the Findlingsweg trail features labelled stones from the Stone Age and Ice Age; information boards explain where they came from. The pile-dweller hut is also on this hike. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Weier and shows how people’s ancestors once lived simply. The labelled stones and the hut offer different ways to explore the past: one through the stones’ origins, the other through life in earlier times.
Museums and culture in Thayngen
The Reiatmuseum im Adler focuses on life and work in the region, from the Palaeolithic and Neolithic periods to modern times. The exhibition includes tools and equipment from traditional crafts, as well as a fully furnished gunsmith’s workshop. Domestic utensils, furniture, clothing and military memorabilia are also on display. The exhibitions may change over time. Thayngen’s cultural offerings also include the Reiat Museum with its Goethe Room, half-timbered houses and Thayngen Castle.
Thayngen Castle is also known as “Zum Oberhof”. Of the two original stair towers, one remains. This adds a specific architectural detail to the picture of local history, while the exhibition at the Reiatmuseum presents a range of objects from everyday life in the region.
Another collection awaits you at the typewriter museum in Bibern: it displays around 470 machines, most of which visitors can try out. The museum opens for groups, clubs, school classes and special requests by prior arrangement. It can be reached from Thayngen or Schaffhausen on SH bus no. 24; check the timetable and arrange your visit in advance.
Nature and trails
Morgetshofsee is a nature reserve of national importance and is listed in the Federal Inventory. As an amphibian spawning site, it is home to eight recorded species and provides habitat for rare European tree frogs, numerous dragonflies and waterbirds. Wildlife sightings may vary by season. Its protected status makes the area a different kind of destination from the historic trails; check the current access rules before visiting. Thayngen is also home to the two kettle lakes Morgetshofsee and Rudolfersee.
The interactive Beaver Trail in Thayngen is aimed at families, schoolchildren of all ages and nature lovers. It starts at Thayngen railway station and is marked with red beaver signs. Check the route conditions before setting out and follow the signs when you arrive.
The hiking route from Thayngen to Opfertshofen passes Churzloch; the CherzenstĂĽbli along the route offers views of the Hegau region. The two places therefore have different stated functions: Churzloch is a place along the route, while the CherzenstĂĽbli is a viewpoint. There are also several barbecue areas, a toilet and facilities for larger groups at Kesslerloch. Check the condition of the facilities before your visit.
