Wilen village square offers seating for locals and tourists, as well as a view of Lake Sarnen. From there, a wheelchair-accessible path leads to the Chapel of St. Michael. Wilen (Sarnen) is a locality in the municipality of Sarnen in the canton of Obwalden. In the wider regional context, the German-speaking canton is part of Central Switzerland.

Chapel of St. Michael and village square

The present-day Chapel of St. Michael was built in 1700 and consecrated on 22 October 1702. It is a freestanding structure in the Baroque style of the early 18th century. The chapel’s history goes back further: the first chapel in Wilen dates to 1568. This allows two distinct historical milestones to be identified at one location, without confusing the older building with the present-day chapel.

An Älplerchilbi church service is scheduled for Saturday, 7 November 2026, at 9:15 a.m. in Wilen Chapel. If this date matters for your travel plans, check the date and programme before travelling. If you rely on the wheelchair-accessible path to the chapel, it may also be useful to confirm the conditions before your visit.

Lakeside swimming and wellness facilities

Wilerbädli is a public lakeside swimming area on Lake Sarnen, near Seehotel Wilerbad in Wilen (Sarnen). The facilities described include a well-maintained sunbathing lawn with shade trees, a bathing jetty, a floating platform and a children’s swing. From the Wilerbad bus stop, Wilerbädli is about 250 metres away on foot. The facilities mentioned may change; check the current conditions before your visit if needed.

There is also the Wilerbad Spa: Seehotel Wilerbad in Wilen on Lake Sarnen offers day passes for its 1,300-square-metre spa area. Facilities include a saltwater bath, an outdoor colour bath, various saunas, a steam bath and a Himalayan salt sauna. A spa lounge and fitness room are also available. Day passes and individual facilities are distinct from a visit to the public lakeside swimming area; you can check the latest information in advance.

Another option is the lakeside sauna, which offers direct access to the lake and views of the mountains. External guests can book it online through HolzerSauna; booking arrangements may change. Hotel Kurhaus am Sarnersee also has a lakeside sauna on its private lakeside grounds. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between the options according to the type of visit you want: public lakeside swimming area, spa area with day passes, or sauna with online booking for external guests.

Hiking and routes around Wilen

The circular hike around Lake Sarnen passes through Summerweid in Wilen. Another section described runs along the hillside path above Wilerbad in the direction of Kirchhofen. This information provides specific guidance on sections of the route, but no walking time. Check the route description and trail conditions before setting out.

The named routes can also be distinguished by their courses: the Sarnen–Giswil section of the Sbrinz Route passes through Wilen on a quiet side road above the northwestern shore of Lake Sarnen. The Sarneraatal Route reaches the cantonal capital of Sarnen via Wilen. For comparison, the key distinction is the route covered: one is the section between Sarnen and Giswil, the other the route via Wilen to Sarnen. Check route information and conditions before setting off.

Getting there by scheduled boat

The Seestern scheduled boat serves the Wilen Waldheim stop on Lake Sarnen seasonally. If you are planning to take the boat, check the current timetable before travelling. Together with the walk from the Wilerbad bus stop to Wilerbädli, these are two specific points to help with planning; they describe different modes of transport and destinations.
