Melchtal refers both to a valley formed by the Grosse Melchaa in the canton of Obwalden and to the village of the same name within it. This small mountain village, with around 400 inhabitants, lies in the heart of Central Switzerland, near the well-known Melchsee-Frutt ski and hiking area. Many tourists travel through the valley from Kerns to Stöckalp. From there, a cable car and, in summer, a mountain road lead to the summer and winter sports resort of Melchsee-Frutt.

When choosing a hotel in Melchtal, you could first consider whether culture, a hike or the connection towards Stöckalp will shape your stay. The valley runs from south to north; at its northern end, a gorge marks its boundary before it branches off into the Sarneraatal. Near the village of Flüeli-Ranft, this gorge is also called the Ranft Gorge.

Pilgrimage Church and Monastery History

A relic of Saint Brother Klaus is displayed for veneration in the Chapel of Grace at Melchtal pilgrimage church. Pilgrims regularly visit the Maria Melchtal pilgrimage church and light candles at the Altar of Grace for their intentions. The church was consecrated on 9 September 1928 in the Neo-Baroque style. Its features include ceiling paintings and stained-glass windows.

The village’s earlier history is also connected with chapels: the first known chapel in Melchtal was solemnly consecrated around 1621. The Benedictine convent of St. Niklaus von Flüe in Melchtal was built between 1892 and 1896. The name Melchtal is also regarded as the purported place of origin of Arnold von Melchtal, one of the three founding figures in the Swiss founding myth of the Rütli Oath.

Winter Hike and Trails in the Valley

The Melchtal–Stöckalp winter hike descends from Melchtal church to the Melchaa. When planning, remember to consider the return journey too: you can retrace the route on snowshoes or take the postbus back. Snow and trail conditions can vary by season; check the conditions and, before setting out, whether the postbus is running.

Another trail leads to Alp Chlisterli. It can be reached on foot via a hiking trail through Melchtal; a small chapel there now commemorates Saint Brother Klaus. As trail conditions can change seasonally, it is worth checking them before setting out. The church, the hike and the chapel offer different points of focus: this makes it possible to combine religious heritage with a walk through the valley, without making them a single route for every stay.

Group Activity

Camp Games are offered as a bookable group activity at Sportcamp Melchtal. The events include archery, pedal racing and a milking competition. Participation requirements may vary depending on the booking; confirm the relevant details in advance. This offers another way to plan your stay alongside the historic sites and trails, if a group activity suits the purpose of your trip.

When looking for a hotel in Melchtal, it helps to decide on the focus of your stay: the pilgrimage church and its art, the history of the monastery, a seasonal trail or the group activity at Sportcamp. For the winter hike, remember to plan your return journey; if you are continuing towards Melchsee-Frutt, Stöckalp is the departure point for the cable car and the summer mountain road.
