At an altitude of around 1,920 metres above sea level, the village of Melchsee-Frutt lies on a high alpine pasture beside Lake Melchsee. The high plateau, with Lake Melchsee and Lake Tannensee, is almost completely surrounded by mountain ranges. Melchsee-Frutt is a summer and winter sports destination as well as a ski area. The activities available depend on the season: hiking and climbing sit alongside snow sports, skiing and cross-country skiing.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

The high plateau is car-free. By public transport, take the Zentralbahn railway to Sarnen, then the PostBus to Stöckalp, and from there the gondola lift to Melchsee-Frutt. Timetables and connections may change, so check your journey before setting off. During its operating season, the Frutt train runs daily between the old mountain station and Tannalp. The route passes through Dörfli, Panoramalift, Kapelle, Distelboden, Tannendamm, Tannensee and Fachshubel. Operating days and frequency depend on the season, so it is worth checking the timetable.

The lifts are also part of the area's history: in 1935, the history of the Melchsee-Frutt lifts began with the construction of an aerial cableway from Stöckalp to Melchsee-Frutt, which at the time was one of the longest in Switzerland. Those interested in the development of mountain transport can find a tangible historical connection to today's route here.

Winter: Slopes, Cross-Country Trails and Snowshoe Routes

At Melchsee-Frutt, 16 modern lifts provide access to 36 kilometres of ski slopes; some lifts and slopes operate seasonally. The Fruttpark is described as Central Switzerland's largest fun park and is aimed at snowboarders and freestylers. The eight-kilometre toboggan run goes from the Melchsee-Frutt mountain station to the Stöckalp valley station, descending almost 1,000 metres. The route features numerous bends and gliding sections; operation depends on the season and weather. At almost 2,000 metres above sea level, there are also three official, signposted snowshoe trails. Their availability depends on snow and operating conditions.

Cross-country trails also vary in length and terrain: the trail to Tannalp is almost twelve kilometres long and crosses hilly terrain. The route from Melchsee-Frutt to Tannalp and back is around 13 kilometres long. There is also an easy circular trail beside frozen Lake Melchsee, with no ascents or descents. The trails can be used for classic or skate skiing; snow and grooming affect their availability. When planning, you can therefore consider the route length and terrain profile separately.

High-Altitude Hike, Karst Landscape and Climbing Routes

The Four Lakes High-Altitude Hike leads from Engelberg via TrĂĽbsee, Engstlensee and Tannensee to Lake Melchsee, then continues to Melchsee-Frutt. It is considered a classic Central Swiss hiking route. In clear weather, the Alpine panorama extends to the Bernese Alps and far across the Central Plateau; visibility depends on the weather.

Melchsee-Frutt lies within a 15-square-kilometre karst area with numerous caves, including Bettenhöhle, Schrattenhöhle and Stäubiloch. On site, you can learn about the formation and significance of the caves in one of Switzerland's largest karst geotopes; guided activities may be available depending on the season. Those interested in rock climbing will find more than 170 routes on the south-facing Boni rock band, with grades ranging from 3a to 8. The routes and safety infrastructure may change. The “Fruttli” via ferrata leads to the summit of Bonistock; check equipment requirements and access conditions before using it.

More Activities

The interactive Ranger Trail combines puzzles, knowledge, exercise and adventure. As the programme format may change, check its current setup before your visit. Ten stations around Lake Melchsee offer a fun way to learn about marmots. Children can also enjoy Fruttli-Land, a free-to-use, multifunctional play area. At the VogelbĂĽel ski lift, a free lift for young children helps them with their first attempts on skis; seasonal availability may vary.
