In Couvet, absinthe history, distinctive buildings and trails into the surrounding landscape offer a variety of discoveries. Explore the townscape through its historic buildings and the Areuse; for outdoor activity, choose from three Helsana Trail routes, among other options. You can shape your stay around culture, nature and activities without planning every experience in the same way.
Absinthe history and visits
Absinthe, also known as the “Green Fairy”, is associated with its origins in Couvet in the Val-de-Travers; its creation is linked to the 1750s. The Route de l’Absinthe places the subject in a cross-border context: it connects emblematic absinthe sites between Pontarlier and the Val-de-Travers. The network between France and Switzerland includes distilleries, museums, artisan businesses, restaurants and heritage sites. You can explore the route on foot, by bicycle or by car.
The options for a visit in Couvet vary in format and group size. Distillerie Artemisia offers guided visits with tastings for groups of up to 30 people; advance booking is required. Absinthe La Valote Martin offers visits and tastings for groups of six or more, by prior arrangement. You can also discover one of the region’s rare historic drying barns, which recalls methods from before absinthe was banned in 1910.
Guided visits at Distillerie d’Absinthe Persoz cover the history of absinthe, the plants and the production process; Gaudentia Persoz explains these topics. Check availability before your trip. Distillerie Wanner offers a distillery visit with tastings of gin, absinthe and liqueurs. It produces and distils its spirits in Couvet, using natural ingredients sourced from the region wherever possible. Check visit dates and conditions in advance.
Townscape between the Areuse and Grand-Rue
Within the built-up area, the Areuse forms an S-shaped river landscape and separates key parts of the townscape. On the left bank, Grand-Rue forms a linear town centre; its buildings date predominantly from the 18th and 19th centuries. These lines and the riverside setting provide a context for viewing the individual historic buildings.
The Temple of Couvet dates from 1658. It is dominated by an imposing bell tower dating from 1766, topped with a Baroque dome. The Place des Halles is defined by an octagonal Baroque fountain dating from 1776. The main bridge is also part of the historic townscape: its metal truss structure dates from 1867.
Another chapter in the town’s history can be seen at the former Dubied SA industrial complex between the Areuse and the railway line. It housed a knitting-machine factory; the complex closed in 1974. Its first building dates from 1867. Alongside the older Grand-Rue, this site reveals different chapters in Couvet’s architectural and industrial history.
Trails and nature topics
The Helsana Trail de Couvet offers three free routes measuring 3.1, 7.3 and 13.3 kilometres. They are open around the clock; the start and finish are in front of the espaceVAL building. The route lengths give you a clear basis for choosing how far to go. Those interested in forestry can explore a different topic on the Sentier de la forêt jardinée above Couvet: the trail explains the principle of “jardinage forestier” (close-to-nature forest management) and covers biodiversity, natural regeneration and sustainable management. Seasonal conditions may vary.
Another hiking route starts in Couvet, passes through forests and pastures, and climbs to the Haut des Joux. It complements the trail routes listed by distance with a route that follows a described landscape. For the night-time snowshoe hike, participants meet at the Hôtel de l’Aigle in Couvet and then travel together to the selected starting point. The activity is seasonal; the snow conditions determine the format. The Hôtel-restaurant de l’Aigle, where this hike begins, is accessible by public transport, including by train. Check timetables in advance.
More activities and planning
espaceVAL offers several activities with different focuses. The Mur de grimpe climbing wall provides indoor climbing throughout the year, introductory courses for beginners and graded routes for experienced climbers. As opening arrangements may change, check the current conditions before your visit. The Piscine d’espaceVAL has three aquatic areas, including a homologated 25-metre pool with four lanes. There is also a wellness area with a sauna and hammam, as well as a solarium; confirm the current status of the facilities before making plans.
For electric-bike rides, the municipality provides two free bicycles, which can be collected from and returned to espaceVAL. Check whether the service is available before your trip. You can vary the pace of your days between visits that require advance booking, a trail loop chosen by distance and activities at espaceVAL. The historic buildings, riverside setting and activities described here each offer a different way to experience Couvet.
