Thielle-Wavre lies 7 km northeast of Neuchâtel, at the southern foot of the Jura. The Entre-deux-Lacs region is located between Lake Neuchâtel and Lake Biel. Within the area, Thielle and Wavre are distinct geographical reference points: Thielle lies on the left bank of the Zihl Canal, while Wavre is on the Plateau de Wavre. The intensively farmed Zihl Plain stretches westward from the Zihl Canal across the plain to the plateau.
Zihl Canal, Zihl Plain and cycling path
The landscape can be understood through these three names: the Zihl Canal, the Zihl Plain and the Plateau de Wavre. The plain is not merely a geographic description; it is intensively farmed and extends westward to the plateau.
A gravel path runs along the Canal de la Thielle and is well suited to cycling. If you plan to use it by bike, check local conditions before setting off.
Country house, boarding school and architecture
Montmirail is an old country house with a farm founded in 1618. The Moravian Church ran a girls’ boarding school there from 1766 to 1988.
Château Tribolet also offers specific architectural points of interest. It has a 17th-century stair tower and a gallery connecting the château to the Corps Central. The gallery was added in 1743–45. The dates refer to different aspects: for Montmirail, the farm’s founding and the boarding school’s period of operation are highlighted; for the château, they refer to the construction of the stair tower and the addition of the gallery.
Archaeological traces at Thielle-Mottaz
Thielle-Mottaz is a settlement of the Late Cortaillod culture. An archaeological study published in 1979 records a total of 1,955 bone remains found. Of these, 835, or 42.7 percent, could be identified. The identifiable bones represent at least 48 domestic and wild animals. The area around Thielle was also inhabited during the Neolithic and Bronze Age. Since Celtic times in the 1st century BC, an important crossing over the Zihl existed at Thielle; a Roman bridge was rebuilt several times.
