More than 120 works carved from tree stumps, a Gothic temple and trails for various winter activities give La Sagne a varied character. The municipality has been documented since the 14th century. When planning your trip, you can choose from both specific cultural attractions and a range of outdoor activities.

Village history and art in the forest

The Temple de La Sagne was built in the Gothic style between 1521 and 1526. Its choir has a ribbed vault. In 1905, the Neuchâtel State Council designated the temple as a historic monument. Its construction history and subsequent designation as a protected monument make it a notable destination for anyone interested in architecture and local history.

The Sentier des Statues features more than 120 sculptures that Georges-André Favre carved from tree stumps over a period of 35 years. Among the fir trees, you will encounter human, plant and animal figures. The trail combines an experience of nature with an artistic theme that encompasses more than one type of subject. Allow about two hours for the round trip from the car park. The trail has a picnic area, firewood, a barbecue fire pit and a shelter.

The Musée régional de La Sagne also explores the history of the valley. Its collections cover archaeology, ethnography, history, fine arts, watchmaking and natural history; the museum also presents the valley’s fauna. It was founded in the 1880s. It remains in the attic rooms of the municipal building that were designated for it at the time, where old wooden-and-glass display cases stand. The museum is open on the first Sunday of each month or by request. Guided tours can be arranged by appointment. Check whether a visit is possible before your trip.

Pastures, erratic boulders and wildlife

The Communal de La Sagne is a communal pasture belonging to the municipality and covers 25 km². It is used for cross-country skiing and mountain biking. In autumn, picnickers hold the famous Neuchâtel Torrée there, cooking sausage in the embers. The Communal thus combines shared pasture use and outdoor activities with the autumn Torrée.

Two rock formations of distinct character are among the area’s notable natural features. Le Grison is considered the largest known erratic boulder in the high valleys of the Jura. Since 24 October 1910, it has been protected under a resolution of the State Council. La Roche aux Crocs overlooks the Vallée de La Sagne. The rock is considered a small, unfenced nature park where chamois, roe deer, foxes and hares roam freely. In La Sagne, you can therefore discover both a single protected erratic boulder and a landscape described as a nature park.

Winter days and practical planning

The Centre nordique La Sagne has 27 km of classic cross-country ski trails, 5 km of winter walking trails and 14 km of snowshoe routes. Seasonal conditions may affect access. In addition, the Ski-Club La Sagne grooms a 5 km pedestrian route between La Sagne and La Corbatière; grooming may also vary seasonally. Alpine skiing is listed for La Sagne together with La Corbatière, although conditions and operations may vary by season. The different route lengths can help you match your planned time to your preferred activity.

The wider Vallée de La Sagne et des Ponts-de-Martel also offers flat walks, hikes on the slopes, cross-country ski trails and snowshoe routes. This regional setting adds various ways to enjoy the outdoors to the local attractions.

If you are looking for a hotel in La Sagne, first decide whether cultural attractions or seasonal activities are your priority. A planned museum visit depends on its opening days or a request; winter activities depend on seasonal conditions. A TransN train connects La Chaux-de-Fonds and Les Ponts-de-Martel via La Sagne. Check the current timetable if you plan to travel by train.
