Menzberg combines sweeping views from the heights with hiking trails and small cultural sites. The village is located at 1,016 m above sea level and offers a 360° panorama. In autumn and winter, Menzberg is often above the sea of fog. At 1,110 m above sea level, Oberlehn is Menzberg’s highest point and offers its own panoramic views—a different vantage point from the village’s elevation.
Hikes with Different Destinations
The hiking trail from Menznau to Menzberg crosses wooded ridges and meadows. From Tschoppen, it follows the Alpine Panorama Trail No. 3 to the Oberlehn viewpoint; from there, it runs along the ridge to Menzberg. This means the trail, viewpoint and arrival in the village are all part of the same hike described here.
The Menzberg–Wolhusen hike is 10.83 kilometres long and rated as moderately difficult. It starts in Menzberg and ends at Wolhusen railway station. The route is well signposted with SwitzerlandMobility “Alpenpanoramaweg 3” signs. Route details may change; signs may also be adjusted during maintenance work. Check the latest route information before setting out.
Another option is the Menzberg–Napf–Holzwegen ridge hike: it leads from Menzberg via the Napf to Holzwegen and offers Alpine panoramas, impressive views into the depths and varied trails. This description highlights different features from the hike to Wolhusen, for which a distance, difficulty rating and railway station as the endpoint are specified.
Beach Chairs, Stories and Breaks
The “Beach Chairs Above the Sea of Fog” experience includes cosy beach chairs at seven locations in Menzberg. It also features three routes lasting from one hour to just under three hours. In the beach chairs, you can listen to village stories by Xaver Vogel, accompanied by music. The beach chairs are accessible in all weather and at any time of day; check before your visit whether conditions have changed.
There are several fire pits for an outdoor break, each with different conditions. The Paradisli barbecue area is freely accessible and open to everyone, provided the forest hut is not rented. The Ofenloch-Rutsche fire pit in Blötti is suitable for barbecuing and relaxing for visitors of all ages. As a landmark on the Alpine Panorama Trail, it lies 50 metres east of the “Längebüelschür” hiking sign.
The Fuchsloch fire pit can only be reached on foot and is located near a small waterfall. Facilities include a fire pit, a table and about 20 seats. As facilities may change, it is advisable to check the information before your visit. The barbecue area by Renggwald is about two kilometres from the village, in a sheltered clearing on the edge of the forest.
Churches and Chapels in the Municipality
The parish church of St. Theodul combines a clearly documented construction timeline with simple neoclassical forms: the foundation stone was laid on 2 July 1809, and the solemn consecration followed on 11 November 1810. The altarpiece “Madonna and Child” is by Melchior Paul Deschwanden.
The chapel of St. Joder stands at 945 m above sea level on the old road from Hergiswil to Menzberg. It remains within the municipality of Hergiswil. The Girislehn Chapel was rebuilt and consecrated in 1993; it is dedicated to St. Wendelin, the patron saint of livestock. Its address is Steinhalden, 6125 Menzberg.
