The Muntatsch viewpoint, the Chapel of St Sebastian and Rochus, and the paths through the village offer visitors a variety of ways to explore Segnas. Activities include hikes, a mountain bike route, a planet trail and a cross-country ski trail. Each route has its own waypoints and conditions to consider when planning.

Hiking trails and navigation

The Muntatsch–Segnas trail follows minor roads, neighbourhood paths and groomed winter hiking trails. It is signposted along its entire route through Segnas, Acletta, Muntatsch and Clavaniev. The trail also passes through Cuoz and Buretsch on its way back to Segnas, passing the Chapel of Sogn Giachen along the way. A bench at the Muntatsch viewpoint offers views of the Medelser Glacier.

At the highest point of the high-altitude trail from Segnas to Sedrun, you can admire a mountain panorama, with or without permanent snow cover. Those taking this high-altitude trail can return to Segnas from Sedrun by train. Check the connections for your travel date. Another circular route starts at the upper end of Segnas: «Segnas – Prau Sura» returns to Segnas after descending through a forest from Mompé Tujetsch. Winter conditions may affect access.

Planet trail and village paths

The planet trail runs from Acletta to Segnas and is marked with brown signposts. Its information panels are designed to help visitors better understand the scale of the cosmos. At the western end of Segnas, the trail meets the popular hiking trail to Sedrun. Along the valley hike «Oberalppass – Sedrun – Disentis», signposts in Segnas point towards Acletta.

The circular tour «With stroller, village round Disentis» passes through the hamlets of Acletta and Segnas. In the centre of Segnas, it goes past well-preserved Walser houses, well-kept gardens and arcades. Another route option is the mountain bike route «MTB Family: Tschamut–Disentis», which descends to Disentis via Mompé Tujetsch and Segnas.

Cross-country skiing and getting there

The Segnas cross-country ski trail offers five kilometres of skating tracks in three loops. It is seasonal and depends on snow conditions. The trail is very close to a Matterhorn Gotthard Railway stop. You can reach Segnas station by train from Andermatt via Sedrun or from Chur via Disentis. Check the timetable for your travel date.

The Chapel of St Sebastian and Rochus can also be reached by train: from Lucerne via the Oberalp Pass or from Zurich via Chur to Segnas; from there, it is a ten-minute walk. The Oberalp Pass itself can be reached by train from Lucerne via Andermatt, or from Zurich via Chur and Disentis.

Chapel, church and local history

The Chapel of St Sebastian and Rochus faces west, has a barrel vault and a three-sided, closed choir. Its high altar dates from 1678 and consists of a simple wooden structure. Around 1638, 30 people died of the plague in Segnas; afterwards, the church was dedicated to the plague saints Rochus and Sebastian.

The oldest painting in the church of Segnas is on the right side altar; it was painted by Hans Greutter. The Sialm meat-drying business is also part of the village’s history: it was founded in Segnas in 1955. Outside opening hours, the Sialm shop in Segnas has a self-service refrigerator.
