Pagig is a district of the municipality of Arosa in the canton of GraubĂĽnden, in the Plessur region on the right-hand, northern side of the Schanfigg Valley. The village is about eight kilometres as the crow flies east of Chur; it is also situated around 60 metres above the cantonal road to Arosa. The terrain ranges from the deeply incised Plessur River through steep slopes and alpine pastures to the Hochwang range. This span from the valley floor to the mountain ridges shapes the landscape around the village.

Hiking: a circular route or a day trip?

The Schanfigg village trail runs along the right-hand side of the valley between Arosa and Chur, passing through St. Peter/Pagig. You can hike it as a circular route over several daily stages, or combine individual sections with the Rhaetian Railway or PostBus for a day trip. This gives you two different time frames to choose from: a multi-stage circular route or a selected section for a day trip. Check the timetables for your connections before travelling.

A 53-kilometre network of hiking trails also runs through the Schanfigg Valley, allowing you to explore the villages of the valley.

Winter days: slopes and groomed trails

The Hochwang snow sports area offers eight natural-snow slopes, with a total of 25 kilometres of pistes. The season and piste availability may vary; if you are planning your stay around snow sports, check the current conditions in advance. For longer winter hikes, groomed trails lead from the Hochwanghütte to Pagig. Here too, check the trail conditions and access locally before planning your hike. In winter, the sports bus runs to the valley station of the Hochwang snow sports area in Fatschél. As operating days and timetables may change, it is worth checking before your trip.

Church and history in St. Peter

The foundations of the church of St. Peter in the Schanfigg Valley date back to the mid-8th century. During renovation work in 1922, long-forgotten frescoes were uncovered; they are particularly visible in the choir and beside the pulpit. As opening hours may change, check them before your visit.

Pagig’s history is also connected with St. Peter: Pagig belonged to St. Peter ecclesiastically and had historical links with the former League of the Ten Jurisdictions. The Reformation was introduced around 1530. The church’s architectural history, its frescoes and Pagig’s historical connections offer different perspectives on the past of the Schanfigg Valley.

Sound installation and organic garden

The “Geiss-Wippen” sound installation commemorates the former gatherings of goats from St. Peter and Pagig for the ascent to and descent from the alpine pastures. The sound objects were designed and built by artist and carpenter Fabio Spink. Alongside the frescoes, you can encounter another form of cultural remembrance, linked to the gatherings of goats in the valley.

The Schanfigg organic garden in Pagig shows how soil, plants and animals work together. Freshly harvested seasonal organic vegetables, herbs, homemade specialities and flowers are offered every week. If you would like to include these offerings in your plans, check the current visiting schedule in advance.
