The village of Soglio lies on a natural mountain terrace above the valley floor. Here, historic buildings in the village centre and trails into the surrounding mountain areas offer different ways to shape a trip. The panorama of Val Bondasca and the peaks rising above 3,000 metres complements the view of the area’s architectural history; most of these peaks are described as snow-covered.
Palaces, Church and Garden
Palaces belonging to the von Salis family stand in the village centre; the buildings date from the 14th to the 18th century. The Protestant church is another historic landmark: it retains its Baroque character, shaped by a renovation in the 18th century. Together, the buildings offer different insights into the history of the village.
Casa Battista, the Hotel Palazzo Salis, is classified as an A-category property under the Swiss Cultural Property Protection system. In 1998, ICOMOS named the hotel “Historic Hotel of the Year”. In 2004, it was among the founding members of Swiss Historic Hotels. These awards and the classification are historical designations of the building.
The garden at Palazzo Salis also has its own history: its oldest known form, dating from the 18th century, was laid out in a geometric design. In the following century, native and exotic trees were added, including a giant sequoia. The garden is open in fine weather during the summer season, from June to October; check before your visit whether the conditions suit your planned date.
The church of S. Lorenzo was first mentioned in 1354; the lower part of the adjoining tower dates from the Romanesque period. Two additional side altars were added when the church was extended in 1471. The parish joined the Reformation in 1552. The church took on its present appearance during a renovation in 1735. These dates show how the building changed over several centuries.
Another place with a rich cultural history is La Streccia in Gassa d'la Streccia. The three buildings first opened to the public during an open day in 2017. Since 2017, cultural events, photography exhibitions and guided tours have been organised there. Photographs by Albert Stumpf, titled “The Bregaglia in 1911”, are on display in the forge at La Streccia. If you plan to visit a particular tour or exhibition, check the current dates and whether the photographs are currently on display.
Mountain Scenery and Trails
Extensive chestnut forests lie just below Soglio. From the terrace, you can look out over Val Bondasca and towards sharp peaks rising above 3,000 metres. Most of these peaks are described as snow-covered. The village centre, chestnut forests and mountain panorama each reveal a different side of the surrounding area.
The Sentiero Panoramico runs from Casaccia to Soglio along the sunny side of Val Bregaglia. It passes Lake Löbbia and then continues through conifer and birch forests towards Roticcio. The Via Bregaglia follows a different route: it is a multi-day cultural trail that can be completed in three or four stages. On the Sentiero Panoramico, the route points described and the landscape provide orientation; for the Via Bregaglia, its multi-day stage structure offers a clear framework for planning.
From Soglio, trails lead to the mountain areas of Däir to the west and Tombal, Plän Vest and Cadrin to the northeast. Another named excursion is the crossing of Pass da la Duana into the Avers Valley, which starts in Soglio. In another direction, a descent leads to Castasegna, the last village before the Italian border. The trails head west or northeast into the mountain areas; the pass crossing leads into the Avers Valley, while the descent leads to Castasegna, the last village before the Italian border.
Getting There and Planning Your Visit
Soglio is served approximately once an hour by a PostBus, which connects with the route between Maloja and Chiavenna. As the frequency is only given approximately, check the current timetable before travelling. For a garden visit, by contrast, the relevant factors are the summer season, from June to October, and fine weather. This lets you plan your journey and account separately for the garden’s seasonal opening.
