Poschiavo is in the southern part of the Swiss canton of GraubĂĽnden. Together with the neighbouring municipality of Brusio, it forms the Puschlav valley, known in Italian as Val Poschiavo. The Rhaetian Railway in the Albula/Bernina landscape passes through Poschiavo and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The World Heritage Site is an outstanding ensemble of engineering, architecture and landscape. The Bernina Express also passes through Poschiavo, connecting St. Moritz with Tirano in Italy.
The Borgo and its architectural history
Piazza da CumĂĽn is surrounded by patrician houses in the Italian style. The late Gothic church of San Vittore is a defining feature of the townscape. Along Via dei Palazzi stand magnificent Venetian-style villas, built by families of emigrants who returned from abroad. These houses also tell the story of the families who came back to Poschiavo after spending time abroad.
Casa Tomé is one of the oldest and best-preserved farmhouses in the Alps and dates from around 1350. It has been a protected monument since 1993 and is a rare example of a vanished farming civilisation. The “From the field to the table” offering at Casa Tomé is devoted to rediscovering traditional local food.
Museums and craftsmanship
Founded in 1950, the Museo Poschiavino tells the story of the Valposchiavo’s history, art and culture through an extensive collection of documents and historical objects. It is housed in Palazzo de Bassus-Mengotti, a building dating from 1655 that is of great artistic and architectural value. The museum in the attic of the Vecchio Monastero offers a different perspective on everyday life: it displays numerous objects from the daily lives and craft activities of the nuns.
The Vecchio Monastero is also home to the Galleria Hidesheimer, which displays 22 collages by writer and artist Wolfgang Hildesheimer. He lived in Poschiavo from 1957 until his death in 1991. Tessitura Valposchiavo also occupies part of Palazzo de Bassus-Mengotti. It is one of Switzerland’s last professional artisan weaving workshops. In its shop, you can buy fabric by the metre, household goods and other products.
The Casa Console Museum is housed in a fully restored mansion dating from 1856. It displays important 19th-century paintings and also features a gallery, a painting school and a music room. On a tour through Poschiavo’s cultural history, you can discover collections and architecture as well as textile craftsmanship.
Historic trails and seasonal experiences
The Giro dei Secoli circular trail starts and ends in Poschiavo. It follows historic trails to Castellasc and links several scenic viewpoints. The guided village tour through the Borgo also explores the area’s history and townscape, explaining cultural, architectural, religious and wine-and-food-related details, as well as the valley’s eventful history. The “Home Stories” audiovisual walk takes you through the Borgo all year round, following in the footsteps of the confectioner families.
Guided hikes with a local BAW guide take place on Wednesdays in July and August; check the latest dates before planning your trip. At Mulino Aino, guided visits are available from 8 June to 19 October 2026, on Mondays from 14:00 to 15:30. Check the latest visitor information before travelling.
