Valbella combines Lake Heidsee with nature experiences, water sports and a range of winter sports. It also has historical traces and a cultural trail that includes Lenzerheide. Lake Heidsee: Landscape and Water
Valbella and Lenzerheide form a high valley on the shores of Lake Heidsee. Valbella lies at around 1,500 metres between Lenzerheide to the south and Parpan to the north. Lake Heidsee, at 1,484 metres, marks the southern edge of the village; to the north, the Lenzerheide Pass, at 1,547 metres, is the gateway to the Churwalden Valley. The mountains on either side of the valley also help with orientation: Stätzerhorn lies west of Valbella, while Parpaner Weisshorn lies to the east.
A nature reserve by Lake Heidsee is home to botanical rarities such as the bog gentian. The lake is also a habitat for tufted ducks, little grebes and goldcrests. In summer, the water warms to over 20°C. The Lenzerheide Water Sports Centre on Lake Heidsee offers windsurfing, sailing, wingfoiling and stand-up paddleboarding; courses are available for beginners and advanced participants alike. Courses are seasonal. You can therefore plan a stay by the lake around both nature and water-based activities, without needing to fit both interests into the same day.
Winter Sports and Practical Information
Valbella ski lift is a T-bar lift measuring 1,276 metres in length. The stated journey time is seven minutes, and its capacity is 1,000 people per hour. These technical details may change following upgrades. The Val Schamaela slope (No. 68b) allows visitors to return to Valbella and its car parks. As access rules may be updated, check the latest information from the operator before setting out.
The Valbella cross-country skiing centre is located right by the lake and serves as a starting point for a day of cross-country skiing. Facilities include a toilet and shower, a changing room, lockers with space for a backpack, and a waxing room. As facility details may change, it is worth checking the latest information before you travel. You can reach the centre by public transport via the “Valbella Canols” bus stop.
The covered Fastatsch children’s area offers another winter sports option. It is open to all visitors at weekends. During the week, the magic carpet can be used; the children’s lift is used by the Lenzerheide snow sports school and is not open to the public. Operating arrangements are seasonal: check them before your trip so you can tell the available options apart once you arrive.
Cycling is also available in different formats. The Lenzerheide Bike School offers private lessons, group courses and camps; for children and teenagers, the programme includes the Kids Bike League and Youth Bike Camp. Guides lead rides on trails through the Lenzerheide bike region. As offerings may change, check in advance which formats are currently available.
Local History and the Cultural Trail
Valbella Pentecost Church was consecrated in 1977 and is dedicated to the mystery of Pentecost. At the request of the local population, its patron saint is Saint Maria Goretti. Another historical trace can be found at the Insel-Chalet: the Lenzerheide-See post office was located there for several decades. In earlier times, Valbella was a Maiensäss, a seasonal settlement where farmers from Lain, Muldain and Zorten lived during the spring and autumn weeks. These places tell different stories about local history—from a religious dedication and a former post office to the farmers’ seasonal way of life.
The “Senda Cultura” tells the story of the Lenzerheide holiday region and runs through Lenzerheide and Valbella. Its 21 panels can be visited in one go or over several stages. Alongside activities by the lake and in winter, it offers a cultural and historical perspective on the region that you can include in your travel plans without having to follow a fixed daily itinerary.
