Moorlands, chapel trails and local cheese history reveal different sides of Châtel-Saint-Denis. When planning your visit, it is worth considering the length and character of each route: alongside short circular walks, there are longer tours and cultural activities with their own seasonal or practical conditions.

Moorland lakes and nature trails

Lac des Joncs lies in the heights of Les Paccots. This deep mountain lake is more than 5,000 years old, surrounded by peat bogs and alpine meadows, and known for its biological diversity. It is protected and listed in the Federal Inventory of Amphibian Spawning Sites of National Importance. An educational trail with information panels and benches explores the distinctive features of the site; there are also large-scale games about plant life.

The circular trail around Lac des Joncs takes 30 minutes and starts at the Auberge des Joncs. Access options listed include car, bicycle and walking; the circular route is available year-round. Check practical accessibility before your trip. This helps distinguish the short time commitment from longer tours without conflating information about the route and access.

Lac de Lussy lies at an altitude of 820 metres. Its moorland belt consists of reeds and floating mats of vegetation, which are very rare on the Swiss Plateau. Eleven hectares of fenland around the lake are listed in the Federal Inventory of Fens of National Importance. The area and its protected status give this natural area a distinct focus alongside the mountain lake in the heights of Les Paccots.

The Sentier botanique starts at the Chapelle du Scé. This easy family and educational walk takes 45 minutes on foot and introduces typical regional plants through explanatory panels. A viewpoint offers views from Lake Geneva to the Jura. For a short walk, the trail combines botanical information with far-reaching views.

For longer hikes, Les Paccots and the Veveyse region offer more than 150 kilometres of marked trails for different ability levels. Another option is the Sentier Gourmand Le Panoramique: it is 13.7 kilometres long and takes four hours and 30 minutes without breaks. The route includes two mountain restaurants and two alpine chalets; their participation may vary seasonally.

Chapels, history and culture

The “D’église en chapelles” circular trail explores the religious heritage of Châtel-Saint-Denis. It is available year-round and accessible to people with reduced mobility. The Chapelle Saint-Roch was built in the 17th century after the plague, together with a cemetery for plague victims; its construction was prompted by the plague. Today, the chapel is listed as a historic monument.

The Chapelle Notre-Dame du Scé was built in 1867 on a rocky outcrop above Fruence. From there, the views extend over Châtel and the Veveyse district to Lake Geneva and Savoy. A pilgrimage path lined with Stations of the Cross leads to the chapel. The Chapelle du Scé is also the starting point of the Sentier botanique, allowing you to distinguish a cultural site from a botanical trail by the activities each offers when planning your visit.

The town’s history also has several facets: Vieux Châtel is a spur near the Veveyse that the lords chose for building a castle because of its strategic location. At Château de Châtel-Saint-Denis, the keep, courtyard, surrounding wall and rampart walk were restored over a period of more than twenty years. Each season, the Universalle welcomes Swiss and international artists as part of Les Culturailes. The municipal cultural programme also includes live performances, film screenings, arts education and public readings.

Cheese, leisure and seasonal activities

The history of cheese is also connected with the Société des laiteries châteloises réunies, founded in 1922. Historically, the organisation processed milk into Gruyère or Vacherin fribourgeois cheese or supplied it to industry. Today, “De l’étable à la table” at Fromagerie Prayoud offers an insight into cheese-making, including access to the maturing cellars. It starts at one of three family farms: Liaudat, Genoud or Perroud. The experience concludes with a fondue at Café Tivoli or the Cercle d’Agriculture. Programme details and participating farms may change.

For the Sentier Gourmand Le Panoramique, allow extra time for breaks, as the stated walking time explicitly excludes them. The participation of the restaurants and alpine chalets may also vary seasonally. “L’aventure fondue” provides a specially prepared fondue set for use along a marked route; booking arrangements may change.

The Station de Ski des Paccots offers a ski school with a snow garden and torchlight descents. The Zone récréative des Paccots is a family recreation area with landscaped paths, various games and a moor with characteristic vegetation. The covered Patinoire des Paccots is located in the heart of the village. Special activities such as ice discos and ice pétanque take place there; the programme may vary seasonally.

Cycling routes also differ considerably. “La petite boucle” is a short, easily accessible 9.6-kilometre gravel loop starting in Châtel-Saint-Denis. “Le Paccota” is a 27-kilometre loop that also begins in Châtel-Saint-Denis and gradually climbs to Les Paccots. Neither route is marked, and both require GPX navigation.

Plan your stay by time and interest

For planning your day, compare the 30 minutes for the circular trail around Lac des Joncs and the 45-minute walking time for the Sentier botanique with the four hours and 30 minutes for the Sentier Gourmand Le Panoramique, excluding breaks. If you are looking for a hotel, these different time commitments and areas of focus can help you tailor your stay to the experiences you want to include.
