Orsonnens combines an interwar church with a location at the edge of the Neirigue valley and a circular trail leading to the confluence with the Glâne. Cultural history and river scenery are therefore two tangible themes for a stay in Villorsonnens. Orsonnens is a locality and was an independent political municipality in the Glâne District of the Canton of Fribourg, Switzerland. On 1 January 2001, Orsonnens merged with Chavannes-sous-Orsonnens, Villargiroud and Villarsiviriaux to form the new municipality of Villorsonnens.

Orsonnens between the Neirigue and the Glâne

Orsonnens lies at an elevation of about 699 m on a spur of land at the southern edge of the Neirigue valley. The locality is near the point where the Neirigue flows into the Glâne, amid the molasse hills of the Fribourg Plateau. This setting between two rivers gives the locality’s landscape a tangible framework: the Neirigue shapes the valley, while the Glâne appears as a riverside stretch along Circular Trail No. 124.

The boundaries of the former municipality encompassed a larger landscape than today’s village centre. The Neirigue formed the northern boundary. To the east, the area extended over the Fin d'Avau hill at 705 m to the Bois du Vernex forest at 726 m. To the south, it stretched across the slope of Orsonnens to the northern slope of the Bois de Saugy forested hill. These details refer to the former municipality; they describe its historical extent, not a current municipal boundary.

Circular trails with different highlights

Circular Trail No. 124 starts and ends at the car park of the new school in Orsonnens. One section runs along the left bank of the Glâne to its confluence with the Neirigue. The trail also leads to the Neirigue and crosses the river on a bridge. Thus, the route features both riverside stretches and a river crossing. To climb into the Bois-de-Vernex, the circular trail follows a faint path uphill. Trail conditions can change; check them before setting out.

Cyclists have a point of reference too: a section of Route 62 of the Circuit autour du Gibloux passes through Orsonnens. You can choose your route according to your preferred focus: Circular Trail No. 124, with its riverside and forest sections, or a section of another route that passes through the locality.

Church, village character and monastery

The Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Orsonnens was built in 1935–1936 to plans by the architect Fernand Dumas of Romont. Art-historical assessments describe it as a manifesto of the renewal of sacred art in the interwar period and one of the finest achievements of the Groupe de Saint-Luc. The village as a whole is also recognised: Orsonnens is among the sites of national importance worthy of protection. The artistic assessment concerns the church building, while the site designation applies to the village.

Another religious landmark is the Monastère Notre-Dame de Fatima in Orsonnens, an active Cistercian monastery with a cloister. Together with the church, it shapes the locality’s religious and cultural character.

Fête du Pressoir: apple harvest and festival day

The recurring Fête du Pressoir combines the apple harvest with a festival programme. Schoolchildren collect apples, and some of the harvest is pressed on the day of the festival. The programme includes musical performances, activities for children and refreshments. The Halle polyvalente Orsonnens is the festival venue. Check the specific festival dates before planning your stay around it. This lets you plan your trip according to whether you want to attend the Fête or discover Orsonnens independently through its village character, church and trails.
