Wangenried combines a distinctive settlement pattern with several specific cultural attractions: the WaudbĂĽni, the Heimelig yodeling club and the Kunst-Hof. Wangenried is a locality in the political municipality of Wangen an der Aare in the Canton of Bern; it merged with this municipality on January 1, 2024. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing the local circular hikes from the transport information for Wangen an der Aare.

Landscape and Location

As a linear village, Wangenried stretches along a slope that descends to the northwest, on the southern edge of the Aare lowlands in the Oberaargau region. The area covers a gently undulating section of the northern Swiss Plateau in the Canton of Bern. Most of it is occupied by the Wangenried heights, a terminal moraine ridge formed by the Ice Age Rhône Glacier. The village’s highest point is on the Rüti, at 495 meters above sea level; Wangenried itself lies at about 473 meters. Wangen an der Aare is two kilometers to the south and Solothurn nine kilometers to the east; both distances are as the crow flies.

The nearby Inkwilersee is another local landscape feature. It lies on the border between the cantons of Solothurn and Bern and is extremely shallow: its maximum depth is five meters. The Solothurn side of the lake, including its shoreline, is designated as a cantonal nature reserve. A site in Inkwilersee has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage property “Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps” since 2011. These protected areas have different boundaries: the cantonal reserve covers the Solothurn side, including the shoreline, while the UNESCO status applies to a site in the lake.

Culture in Wangenried

Waudbüni is an open-air theater association from Wangen an der Aare and Wangenried. Individual productions and dates may change; if you are planning to attend a performance, check the details for the specific date. A local landmark is the “Hoschtet”: it is behind the schoolhouse and below the former Leuenberger inn. The Heimelig Wangenried yodeling club began on March 8, 1944, as an all-male yodeling club and today consists of a mixed choir. Comparing its founding era with the present shows how the club’s membership has changed.

The Kunst-Hof exhibition space displays paintings and drawings; the farm also has a creative garden with sculptures. This makes the Kunst-Hof an addition to the area’s club and theater offerings, bringing in visual art. Travelers who want to explore different cultural themes will find specific points of interest here: the theater association, yodeling club and visual artworks each have their own focus.
