On Lake Biel, Nidau combines a long urban history with natural spaces for recreation. The castle and Old Town reveal the historic side of the «Stedtli»; the lido and paddling routes offer a different way to enjoy the water. You can choose how to experience the destination—through culture, swimming or a canoe trip—without cramming every interest into a single itinerary.

Castle and city history

Nidau’s history stretches from a Stone Age lakeside settlement to a medieval castle town. Around 1140, Count Ulrich III of Neuchâtel had a wooden castle built; the present-day castle soon replaced it. Remains of the medieval town fortifications, including walls, gates and towers, have also been preserved. The castle and fortification remains represent different chapters in the town’s history.

The Nidau Castle Museum is dedicated to the Jura water correction project. Its exhibition explains an immense undertaking that had a lasting impact on the Seeland landscape. As well as the town’s history, it therefore turns the spotlight on the landscape of the Seeland.

Lake Biel, lido and canoe routes

Nidau Lido offers direct access to Lake Biel. Facilities include a 50-metre swimming pool, a non-swimmers’ pool with a wide waterslide, a children’s paddling pool, diving boards at 1 and 3 metres, and a large sunbathing lawn. As individual facilities may change, check the current information about what is available before your visit.

You can reach the lido on foot, by bicycle or by public transport on bus route 4 to the Nidau Strandweg stop. As timetable details may change, check the connection before travelling.

The named water route «Aare Canoe» runs from Biel (Nidau) to Büren an der Aare. A paddling route from Nidau initially follows a stretch of Lake Biel southwards, then branches off into the Nidau-Büren Canal. Seasonal conditions may affect access, so take them into account when planning your trip.

Town square and events

The renovated town square in the heart of Nidau’s historic Old Town offers space to relax, as well as a venue for markets and small events. The traditional Nidau Onion Market is held there, with culinary highlights and craftsmanship among its offerings.

The Festival of Cultures takes place every year in the library square. Its programme includes culinary specialities from various countries, live music on stage, and games and fun for all ages. If you want to make the festival a fixed part of your trip, check the event dates in advance. The two events also differ in setting: the traditional Onion Market takes place in the town square and combines food with crafts; the Festival of Cultures uses the library square and adds stage music and activities to its specialities from various countries.
