The Sense forms Neuenegg’s southern boundary, while the Forst lies to the north. For centuries, the area has also been shaped as a borderland between languages, cantons and denominations. Anyone considering Neuenegg as a destination will therefore find a range of themes to consider when planning a trip: river scenery, traces of history and trails through the municipality.

Getting here and finding your way

Neuenegg is connected to the SBB and BLS rail networks and to a cantonal road; the A12 can be reached via a direct motorway link. For your journey, you can compare the specific rail or road connections that suit your travel dates. The municipality’s boundaries also provide clear geographical bearings: the Sense lies to the south and the Forst to the north.

The Sense corridor and trails

Since 1 August 2026, the riverside path on the right bank of the Sense, along the railway line between Laupen and Neuenegg, has been open again to non-motorised traffic, namely pedestrians and cyclists. Later construction phases may affect other sections, so check for current updates before setting off. Along the reopened Sense corridor, eleven information panels in total are located on the Bernese and Fribourg banks. They explain habitats along streams and ponds, as well as dippers, kingfishers, amphibians and beavers.

A dedicated highlight is the “Sense Nature Trail”: it has six stations covering themes related to the river landscape and its distinctive features. Listening posts and peepholes offer a chance to experience unusual aspects of the river landscape. The three “Neuenegg Trails”, inaugurated in 2015, are different: they lead to historical, cultural and scenic highlights in the municipality. The three walking routes are colour-coded “BLUE”, “GREEN” and “RED”; the three suggested walks include 25 stops in total. Panels with QR codes provide information about each location along the routes.

Hiking maps for the “Sense Nature Trail” and the “Neuenegg Trails” are available free of charge from the municipal administrations of Neuenegg and Laupen and from Raiffeisenbank Sensetal branches. This makes it easy to match route information with the themes that interest you most, without confusing the two trail offerings.

Historical sites and culture

Individual places also tell different chapters of the municipality’s story. The “Hole” is a historic sunken lane, parts of whose cobbled surface have been preserved. The site of today’s church was already home to an early church building around 1100; the present nave was built in 1300. At the Chutzen, a panoramic view and a bench mark the viewpoint. In the old Bernese territories, the Chutzen was also the site of a watchfire and part of an alarm system that extended from the Limmat to Lake Geneva. Panoramic panels have been installed at the Chutzen and the Chapf.

The blue route of the “Neuenegg Trails” passes stop 3 at the “Celtic Burial Mound” in Landstuhl and stop 10 at the “Beerihus”, described as the oldest rural schoolhouse in the Canton of Bern. Most of the burial mounds in the area of the Celtic grave date from the Hallstatt period, 800 to 500 BC; some are attributed to the La Tène period, 500 to 100 BC. Another historical landmark is the Bramberg Monument: it commemorates the Battle of Laupen, in which the Bernese and their allies were victorious on 21 June 1339. The monument’s stone was erected in 1853.

The “Natershus” bakehouse dates from 1758. It can be rented for baking or for an aperitif and has room for 20 people. The historic Neuenegg shooting match is also part of the annual calendar: it takes place every year on the first Sunday in March. Check the exact date before your trip.

Cycling and when to visit

The Sense riverside path includes a clearly designated section for pedestrians and cyclists; another regional cycling route is the Heart Route (Route 99). It runs from Lausanne to Rorschach, or in the opposite direction, and is divided into thirteen daily stages that can be ridden individually or as a multi-day tour. The Heart Route is open to cyclists from 1 April to 31 October. As season dates may change, check the period before setting off.

During your visit, you can choose between a focus on the river landscape, the signposted trails or individual historical sites. For a recurring event such as the Neuenegg shooting match, however, the exact date matters; the Heart Route is also subject to seasonal dates. These distinctions help you match the themes of your stay with the relevant dates and conditions.
