A brine bath with water heated to 35 °C, a hike to Jegenstorf and striking reminders of local history give Urtenen-Schönbühl its different facets. What you would like to do can shape the focus of your stay: bathing and saunas, exploring the landscape or discovering architecture and historic buildings.
NaturSolebad and sauna world
Solbad Schönbühl is Switzerland’s largest NaturSolebad. Its water surface covers 600 m², and the water temperature is 35 °C. The bathing area includes indoor and outdoor pools, massage jets, as well as bubble seats and bubble loungers. You can explore the water area by pool type or by the water and seating features available.
The sauna world at Solbad & Spa Schönbühl complements this with a bio sauna, a Finnish sauna, an earth-and-fire sauna, a panoramic infusion sauna and a herbal steam bath. If you plan to make the baths or saunas a key part of your stay, check the latest operating details before travelling.
On foot through the landscape and village districts
Urtenen-Schönbühl stretches across gentle hills in the Urtenen Valley; forests and fields shape the landscape. It is well suited to walks and bike rides. One specific option is the roughly two-and-a-half-hour hike “Detours to Jegenstorf.” It starts at the RBS railway station in Urtenen and leads through Oberdorf, the old part of Urtenen, then on to Buebeloo Forest and Jegenstorf. Longer sections follow paved surfaces—a practical consideration when choosing shoes and a route.
The hike links a start at the railway station with a route through the old part of the village and onward into the forest. If hiking is your main aim, this tour offers a clearly defined suggestion; those who prefer shorter routes or a bike ride can find another starting point in the landscape descriptions.
Architecture, history and village life
Urtenen Church stands out for its modern architecture. It was built in exposed concrete between 1966 and 1968. Its floor plan forms a parabola pointing towards infinity, while the exterior recalls the calyx of a flower. Alongside regular church services, the church hosts films, theatre, discussion groups and panel discussions, as well as meditative and ecumenical events; individual programmes may vary.
Older traces also form part of the local landscape: the oldest settlement traces in Urtenen-Schönbühl date back to the Neolithic period, while Urtenen was first mentioned in a document in 1249. At Lindhohleweg 23b stands a granary built in 1707, one of the oldest surviving buildings in the municipality. Urtenen-Schönbühl has 40 protected buildings in total. In the village centre is the historic Landgasthof Schönbühl, a sandstone building dating from 1846. The restaurant serves regional Bernese specialities and seasonal dishes from the region.
The 11i-Märit is both a village market and a meeting place. It features merchandise and information stalls, food and drinks, activities for children, and stage entertainment. Individual programme items may vary; if the market is important to your travel plans, check the specific date and what is on offer. From March to October, Kulturplatz provides furnished seating and shade-giving plants. It invites visitors to linger and can be rented for events.
Plan your journey and overnight stay
Urtenen-Schönbühl is around 10 kilometres from Bern and is part of the capital’s urban agglomeration. During the day, RBS trains run between Urtenen and Bern every 15 minutes; check the timetable before you travel. The transport network also includes SBB, RBS and local bus stops in Schönbühl, as well as RBS stops in Shoppyland and Urtenen. Bernstrasse, rail connections and the A1/A6 motorway junction helped the municipality develop from a farming village into a regional transport hub.
For bike rides, the municipality rents out one or two e-bikes as part of a pilot project in partnership with Steve’s Bike Point. Pick-up and return are at Steve’s Bike Point at Solothurnstrasse 19 in Urtenen-Schönbühl; booking a few days in advance is recommended. As the offer may change, check availability beforehand.
The transport links and range of excursion options help you consider Urtenen-Schönbühl as a place to stay without limiting your trip to just one focus.
