The church in Erlach has a longer history than the castle and old town: it was first mentioned in writing in 1185. Its tower houses three bells dating from 1404, 1568 and 1579. The church is open at all times and can be visited.

Erlach Castle was built at the end of the 11th century. Count Burkhard of Fenis had it built to protect the road at the upper end of Lake Biel. Together with the church and town hall, it shapes the historic townscape; it is one of the oldest castles in the Canton of Bern. If you would like to get to know Erlach better, you can book a one-hour guided tour of the old town and its lanes. It includes the exterior of the castle and its garden; reservations are required.

History and Art in the Town

Erlach Museum is located in the castle. On display are historically valuable objects, paintings and photographs, as well as items from various areas of work undertaken by former residents. Visits are possible only as part of a guided tour, including during official opening hours. As visitor arrangements may change, it is advisable to check the options before visiting.

Another glimpse of local culture can be found in the historic rooms of the former patrician house of the Von May family: Galerie Mayhaus regularly holds contemporary art exhibitions there. Guided visits to the bunkers are also offered in Erlach; check dates and access arrangements in advance. This brings together a range of historical and cultural discoveries, from the older town centre to exhibitions and guided visits.

Wine, Landscape and Läset-Sunntige

Wine is part of Erlach’s landscape as well as its festival calendar. Molasse soils predominate in the Erlach region and on St. Peter’s Island. The vineyards benefit from the warmth stored in the soil by the lake and from the terraces’ microclimate. The Räbluskurve educational trail uses information panels to share insights about wine and vines. The Hasenlauf vineyard offers its entire wine range at its tasting and sales shop in the town of Erlach; check current opening hours before visiting.

Wine culture is especially vivid during the Läset-Sunntige. Held every year on the first and second weekends after the Federal Day of Thanksgiving, Repentance and Prayer, they usually take place in late September or early October. The programme includes a large procession, a market, open wine cellars, music and other events. Exact dates vary from year to year. Culinary specialities in Erlach include Fischknusperli and Treberwurst, a sausage associated with pomace; whether a dish is available depends on the individual restaurant.

By the Lake and on St. Peter’s Island

Erlach lies on the western shore of Lake Biel. Picturesque lanes and squares, the castle and the proximity to the water give the town its distinctive setting. Erlach is also a good starting point for visiting St. Peter’s Island. The 6 km island trail passes eleven interactive stations sharing information about flora, fauna and cultural history. One starting point is at the beginning of the Heidenweg in Erlach. Nearby, St. Peter’s Island and its Heidenweg are designated as a nature reserve and as a nationally important waterbird and migratory bird reserve.

Jolimont also offers a different perspective on the landscape: a picturesque path leads uphill, with views of Erlach and St. Peter’s Island. The “Across the Jolimont” hike runs from Ins via Jolimont to Erlach. In the forest, you may spot roe deer and foxes in the wild. A shuttle with room for up to eleven people operates from Erlach to the southern landing stage of St. Peter’s Island; check the service details in advance.

Water Activities and Trails for Different Interests

If you would like to get out on the water, you can paddle a canoe or kayak from Erlach to Biel, or rent a pedal boat for an outing on Lake Biel. The shoreline at the beach slopes gently, making it suitable for younger children to swim safely. The sunbathing lawn has a boules court, a table tennis table and a beach volleyball court. There is also a picnic and barbecue area with a table and benches at Tüfelsburdi.

Erlach can be reached by public transport, particularly by PostBus or boat. Check timetables before travelling. Whether you are interested in local history, wine, lakeside trails or spending time on the water, the range of activities offers different ways to get to know Erlach and its surroundings.
