La Ferrière Be combines a rural character with an unusually diverse architectural history. Farmhouses dating from the 17th century, traces of the watchmaking industry and hiking trails through wooded pastures reveal different sides of the village. La Ferrière is a municipality in the Canton of Bern and is considered remote and shaped by agriculture; French gives it its character. For your trip, you can therefore focus separately on cultural history and outdoor activities. The village is part of the neighbouring Parc du Doubs.
Farmhouses, Manor Houses and Industrial History
Several historic farmhouses showcase different forms of the region’s architectural heritage. Combe du Pelu is a double farmhouse dating from 1671 and 1672, restored in 1992. It has two historic kitchens; an inscribed fireplace lintel in one kitchen bears the date 1671. Haut des Vieilles dates from 1614 and was also restored in 1992. This typical farmhouse of the High Jura has preserved numerous original openings and is apparently the municipality’s oldest surviving farmhouse with a recorded date. Rangée des Robert 2 is also a double farmhouse: its building sections date from 1664, 1685 and 1690, and restoration began in 1989.
The manor houses vary in scale. La Cibourgs Bise Noire was built around 1790 and renovated in the 1950s; it is considered a rare and outstanding example of a regional manor-house type. Le Seignat dates from around 1800 and is a good example of the type of small regional manor house. These dates help place the buildings in context without reducing the heritage to a single period.
The watchmaking industry also left visible traces in the village’s history. The house in the village dates from 1854 and bears witness to the development shaped in part by the watchmaking industry in the 19th century. A former factory building was constructed as a watch factory between 1906 and 1913. From 1913, it housed a milk flour factory, and from 1924 to 1976, a pasta factory. Older cultural connections reach further back: the Logis de la Licorne was established as an inn in La Ferrière in 1688. The Gagnebin brothers founded a natural history museum in the pavilion of their house, which was visited by many travellers. Abraham Gagnebin welcomed Jean-Jacques Rousseau to La Ferrière; according to tradition, they planted the lime trees together that still stand there today.
Hiking Trails and Seasonal Differences
There are hiking and cycling trails, cross-country ski trails and snowshoe trails around La Ferrière. The seasons offer quite different activities: in winter, a popular cross-country ski trail runs from La Ferrière to Val-de-Ruz. In summer, hiking trails cross the Jura heights to Montagne du Droit and towards the Doubs area. This lets you plan around your preferred activity rather than treating winter and summer trails as the same kind of outing.
One specific hiking route links Mont-Soleil and La Ferrière: it passes through the characteristic wooded pastures of the Grand Chasseral and ends in the village. The route is considered accessible to everyone. On the Bois, chaux, murs et vaches hiking trail, the Mennonite chapel of La Chaux-d’Abel is a historic site. Another trail leads from Chasseral Outdoor to the banks of the Doubs. Mule treks there usually last one or two days; check in advance whether they are available for your dates.
You can also include shorter cultural visits in your trip plans: cultural attractions include the village church of La Ferrière and the nearby watchmaking towns of La Chaux-de-Fonds and Le Locle. Traditional festivals and events keep French-speaking culture alive. At sunset, red, golden and orange hues can spread across the vast sky in La Ferrière.
Accommodation and Planning Your Stay
Chasseral Outdoor offers a holiday centre in a Jura farmhouse in La Chaux-d’Abel, with a group house, dormitories and holiday apartments. Check booking details and availability before planning your trip. There are also two children’s playgrounds: one in the village and one in La Chaux-d’Abel. These details add practical guidance on choosing where to stay to the cultural and nature highlights, without assuming a set route between the different attractions.
