The Heimiswil-Kaltacker QR Story Trail offers a hands-on introduction to Kaltacker: since 1 May 2024, ten numbered QR stations have been telling a continuous story for children and their companions. Other highlights include the Lueg Memorial, trails leading to various destinations and historic sites. If you are looking for accommodation in Kaltacker, you can first decide whether you would like your stay to focus more on the story trail, hiking, or history and landscapes.
Routes and access to the Lueg Memorial
The Lueg Memorial commemorates 54 Bernese cavalrymen who died during the Spanish flu; it was erected in 1921. By public transport, get off at the “Lueg” stop; from there, it is about a 15-minute walk. There is a car park below the viewpoint by the memorial; from there, a steep walk of about five minutes is required. Both time estimates refer to the walk from the respective point and are not total journey times.
The hiking trails also differ in their destinations. The memorial can be reached on foot via the Burgdorf–Kaltacker–Lueg–Junkholz–Affoltern hiking trail. The Lueg hiking trail runs through Kaltacker to Burgdorf. Another route connects Affoltern i. E., Lueg, Rachisberg, Otzenberg and Hasle-Rüegsau. For cyclists, the Lueg is the highest point on the Burgdorf Ost 899 cycle route.
History at specific sites
The Hirschen Kaltacker building has been described as an inn since 1689. After the old building burned down in 1804, it was rebuilt. The dates therefore mark different historical events: 1689 refers to its designation as an inn, while 1804 marks its reconstruction after the fire. Kaltacker is also home to the former nail forge of the Stalder brothers.
Planet trail and landscape
The Planet Trail explores a different subject: at a scale of 1:1 billion, it illustrates the size of the Sun and the planets, as well as their distances from the Sun. This places two scales side by side: the size of the celestial bodies and their distances from our star. It gives your stay a scientific focus alongside the historic sites.
The yew tree in Gerstler, Kaltacker, is traditionally described as a “1,000-year-old rarity”. This age is part of the traditional description and is not intended as a precise scientific estimate.
For a broader view of the landscape, you can also explore the municipality of Heimiswil, which encompasses a section of the hilly landscape east of the Emmental. The Heimiswil valley is a characteristic valley in the molasse hill country east of the Emmental. The ridges on its northwestern and northern sides average 700 to 800 metres in elevation, while those on the southeastern side reach 800 to 850 metres. Forest and pastureland predominate in the higher elevations of Heimiswil. The municipality’s main valley is about six kilometres long and joins the Emmental above Burgdorf.
