Bubendorf is in the Liestal district of the canton of Basel-Landschaft. The Wildenstein nature reserve with its oak grove, the castle, and the town’s cultural collections offer different focuses for a trip: nature, architectural history, and museum visits. Which ones you choose to combine depends on whether you plan to spend more time walking through the landscape or exploring Bubendorf’s local history.

Oak Grove, Nature Reserve and Waterfall

The Wildenstein nature reserve lies on a plateau in the Tabular Jura above Bubendorf, at an elevation of about 500 metres. Because of its great cultural-historical and ecological significance, the canton of Basel-Landschaft protected the area around Wildenstein Castle in 1997. The ancient oak trees provide a habitat for more than 1,000 animal and plant species. More than 140 lichen species have also been discovered on them, making Wildenstein one of Switzerland’s most significant lichen sites. The Lesser Butterfly-orchid, a type of orchid, also grows at only this site in the Baselbiet Tabular Jura.

On guided tours of the oak grove, rangers offer insights into the landscape as a whole and the distinctive features of individual trees. Another topic is the native woodpecker species, which regularly nest there and can be distinguished by their characteristics. If you plan to join a tour, check availability before your trip. The Sormattfall, a waterfall with flowstone, lies below Wildenstein Castle. Its water conditions vary by season.

Wildenstein Castle and Trails Through the Landscape

Wildenstein Castle consists of a residential and defensive tower. It evolved from a medieval clearing castle and noble residence tower into a castle and Basel country estate. The interior can be visited on public guided tours held on the first Sunday of the summer months; the castle is not open to the public on other days. Check the tour dates if visiting the interior is important to your plans. Separate from this, the information trail around the castle is accessible at any time and offers insights into the past. A fairy-tale box along a circular trail also tells the story of the legendary Kunigunde.

For a hike, the Bubendorf–Murenberg–Wildenstein–Bubendorf route covers 7.1 kilometres; the stated walking time is just over two hours, with 270 metres of ascent and 252 metres of descent. This walking time does not include time for breaks and sightseeing. The hike begins at the Bubendorf, Zentrum stop and ends at Bubendorf, Steingasse. Both stops are served by bus routes 70 or 71; Bubendorf, Zentrum can be reached from Liestal. As route details may change, it is worth checking the current directions before setting out.

You can also plan your trip to the nature reserve without doing the circular hike: BLT bus route 70 runs from Basel Aeschenplatz or Liestal railway station. From the Bubendorf, Steingasse stop, it is about a 30-minute walk to the plateau; the route is signposted. If you are travelling by bike, the Wildenstein cycling route is another option: it passes through Bubendorf and then climbs briefly to Murenberg.

Museum and Bubendorf’s Architectural History

The Bubendorf Crèche and Toy Museum brings together a range of collections. On display are crèches and crèche figures from around the world, dating from the mid-17th century onwards, as well as children’s books and toys from the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries from German-speaking countries. Local history and customs complement the exhibits; changing annual exhibitions, including those by local artists, introduce additional topics. The museum is designated “of regional significance” for the protection of cultural property. The current exhibition offers a distinct focus for a visit, alongside the historic buildings.

These buildings also include more modest, specific architectural details. The former Dinghof of the cathedral provostry at Hauptstrasse 52 is a three-storey residential building with Gothic triple windows, a pitched roof, and stepped gables; a barn dating from 1600 is attached. The parish church in Bubendorf contains old heraldic glass panels. The parish hall has a coffered ceiling with painted wooden panels dating from around 1700. Together with the history of Wildenstein Castle, these features offer different ways to explore the municipality’s architectural history, without all the impressions coming from a single period.
