At the confluence of the Birs and the Rhine, protected natural areas, green spaces by the water and a major example of post-war modernist architecture come together in Birsfelden. The museum, contemporary performing arts venue and farmers’ market offer different reasons to visit. Which of these sides you would like to explore will give your visit its own focus.

Nature and green spaces by the water

The approximately one-hectare Biotop Am Stausee nature reserve combines a pond with flower-rich meadows and dense hedges of native shrubs and trees. The focus here is a clearly defined natural area. The Birschöpfli has a different character: it lies in the triangle between the mouth of the Birs and the Rhine and offers an expansive green space with shade-giving trees. You can play or relax there, or use Birschöpfli as a starting point for a refreshing swim in the Rhine.

The Kraftwerkinsel is also a recreational area. Its green spaces and mature, shade-giving trees add another feature to Birsfelden’s waterside landscape. The Biotop, Birschöpfli and Kraftwerkinsel are different places for nature and recreation, rather than a single excursion destination.

Power station, hiking trail and Rhine promenade

The Birsfelden power station was completed in 1954 and is one of the most important examples of post-war modernist architecture in the Basel region. It spans the entire width of the Rhine and connects the banks of Birsfelden and Kleinbasel. If you would like to discover the hydroelectric power station on a hike, you can take the four-hour Dreiland hiking trail; the route can be shortened as desired. Check the route and accessibility before your trip.

The Barfusspark is located on the Rhine promenade, very close to the Birsfelden power station. Its circular route, around 300 metres long, passes through a variety of stations. Its approximate length and circular route offer a different way to enjoy your time by the Rhine than the longer hike.

Museum and contemporary performing arts venue

The Birsfelden Museum is housed in Birsfelden’s oldest schoolhouse, built in 1853. The museum has a historical archive and regularly hosts art exhibitions as well as historical and themed exhibitions. If you would like to visit a specific exhibition, check the dates in advance.

ROXY Birsfelden is a venue and production centre for the independent contemporary theatre, dance and performance scene. It provides professional local dance and theatre groups with working facilities and supports emerging artists. Its programme also includes events for young audiences aged eight and over. As the programme changes, check the current schedule if you are planning to attend an event.

Market, Basel and choosing your stay

The Birsfelden farmers’ market takes place on the first Saturday of every month from 09:00 to 12:00 at Zentrumsplatz. You can factor this regular monthly time slot into your travel plans; check before you arrive whether the date fits your stay. For a hike or an event, the route or programme determines the best time to visit.

From Birsfelden, you can reach Basel in just a few minutes by tram or bus, or on foot along the Rhine. When planning your stay, you can decide whether to focus on Birsfelden’s natural and cultural attractions or add a visit to Basel. This lets you shape your stay around the things you actually want to experience.
