Schwellbrunn can be explored through a range of themes: puzzle trails with a clear choice between two options, a hiking route with a specified distance and duration, and cultural traces and village history. This distinction is useful when planning a stay: on the puzzle trails, you choose between route options, while the Landscheidi Trail has a stated distance and hiking time. The cultural trails offer insights into the history of the village and also pass through landscapes where traces of industrialization are visible.

Puzzle Trails and the Landscheidi Trail

The circular “Hüpfis Rätselweg” trail starts and ends in Schwellbrunn. It passes over pastureland and through forests and includes eight puzzle stations. The puzzles may change. The two puzzle trails also differ in length: “Stüpfis Rätselweg” is marked in green and is shorter, while “Hüpfis Rätselweg” is marked in blue and is almost twice as long. This comparison gives you a concrete point of reference when choosing an option. As the puzzles, route details or trail markers may change, check the latest information before setting out.

The Landscheidi Trail is an 8 km route that takes four hours, from Schwellbrunn, Halden, via Landscheidi, Sägenbach and Rötschwil, and back to Schwellbrunn. It follows a ridge with views of the Appenzell hills, the Alpstein range with Säntis, and Lake Constance. It also leads to Risiwaldhöhe, Schwellbrunn’s highest point at 1,100 metres. The stated distance and duration give you a concrete guide for planning your day. Seasonal conditions may affect accessibility; check conditions in advance.

Cultural Traces and Village History

The Schwellbrunn Cultural Trail offers insights into the village’s diverse cultural history. Another perspective is provided by the Cultural Trail section from Urnäsch to Schwellbrunn: it ends in the village centre, where there is a public transport connection by bus. Check the current timetable if you plan to use this connection. Another section leads from Schwellbrunn to Herisau. It passes through the original hilly landscape, with traditional farming structures, to the Wissbach Gorge, where traces of early industrialization can be seen. Seasonal trail conditions may affect this route.

Schwellbrunn is a linear village set along a characteristic ridge. Its development began with the construction of the church in 1648 and continued until the 19th century. The Protestant Church of Schwellbrunn was inaugurated in 1648 as the village’s first church. Since then, the appearance of Schwellbrunn has remained essentially unchanged; the village’s townscape is of national importance. These historical milestones provide a timeline for a visit to the village: the construction of the church marks the beginning of a period of development whose architectural character took shape through the 19th century.

The history of textiles is also part of the village’s past. Linen production, cotton weaving, and domestic spinning and winding shaped it. Schwellbrunn was voted Switzerland’s most beautiful village in a public vote in 2017 and is a member of the “Most Beautiful Villages of Switzerland” association, founded in 2015. A stay here offers both walks through the landscape and a glimpse into the village’s architectural and economic history.
