Explore Oberegg along paths through hamlets and farmsteads, themed trails and circular hikes. The village also has its own local and church history, as well as views towards Lake Constance. When choosing what to do, it is worth noting the different time estimates: the Gschichtliweg combines a village walk with stories, while “Rundum Oberegg” is described as a longer circular tour with its own distance and stated duration.

Hiking Trails and Themed Paths

Many hiking trails lead from Oberegg through hamlets and farmsteads, climbing as far as the Landmark. One specific circular tour is “Rundum Oberegg”: it is 7.9 kilometres long, rated moderate and listed as taking 2 hours and 25 minutes. The starting point and finish are at the Oberegg, Post stop. The route climbs from Oberegg to St. Anton and returns through a landscape shaped by ravines and ridges. Its described route includes far-reaching views of the mountains, river and lake. The distance, difficulty rating and time estimate give you points of reference for comparing this loop with shorter village walks.

The surrounding hills of Oberegg also offer views towards Lake Constance. When visibility is good, the view from Kafi Anton extends across the Rhine Valley, the Alpstein, the mountains of Austria and Liechtenstein, and Lake Constance. Visibility depends on the weather. Another circular hike, “Through Two Cantons and Three Municipalities,” leads from Wald to St. Anton.

“Sepp’s Hiking Suggestion” starts in Oberegg, goes via Lachen to Walzenhausen and returns to Oberegg. Along the way, it passes Chindlistein, where information boards share interesting facts about the unusual stones. In summer, there is a fire pit by the Klusbach where you can barbecue, as well as the chance to cool off in the stream. The seasonal fire pit makes this section particularly appealing for a summer hike.

In the village, the Gschichtliweg starts at Bärenpärkli and leads through Oberegg, with ten stops along the way. At each stop, you can scan a QR code to hear the next part of the story read aloud. The stories and fairy tales are renewed four times a year. The walking time alone is listed as 40 minutes; allow around 70 to 80 minutes depending on your group if you also stop to read. This lets you distinguish the walking time from the time spent at the stops.

Alongside hiking trails, there are various mountain biking routes for different ability levels. In winter, the options include a ski lift and a network of cross-country ski trails. Hiking, mountain biking and winter sports are therefore available at different times of year, rather than all activities being tied to the same season.

Church History and Village Character

The name Oberegg first appears in a household census in 1535, when it referred to a hamlet. In 1654, construction began on a parish church in the hamlet of Oberrickenbach for the Catholic residents of Oberegg-Hirschberg. The church was consecrated in 1658, when the parish was also established. It also includes St. Anton Chapel, built at the beginning of the 18th century.

A fire destroyed the church in Oberegg on 16 April 1817. The present-day church was consecrated in 1872. Its west-facing main façade is reminiscent in design of churches in northern Italy. The progression from hamlet name to parish foundation and, later, church gives a visit to the village a historical dimension that can be combined with walks through the area.

More Trails and Connections

The “Walzenhausen–Kaien” hiking stage crosses the border into the Oberegg district and passes through the village. It ends at Kaien, where hikers can board the postbus. Buses from St. Anton travel towards Heiden or Trogen, with connections to the rail network; check current connections when planning your trip. St. Anton also has a small fire brigade museum. If you want to combine hikes with local history, Oberegg offers several specific points of interest: the Gschichtliweg in the village, the church and trails climbing into the surrounding landscape.
