Halle and Hunneberg are accessible from Vargön. The range of activities includes three cycling trails in the ecopark, guided activities and water experiences, as well as insights into geological history. When choosing accommodation in Vargön, it is worth first deciding what you want to focus on during your stay – wildlife, outdoor activities, or landscape and history, for example. The beaver safaris differ in their days of operation and itineraries; geology and history are separate topics.
Activities Between Cycling Trails, Forest and Water
There are three cycling trails in the Halle and Hunneberg Ecopark, maintained by OK Skogsvargarna and the Hunneberg Sports and Exercise Club. A guided hike is offered on Hunneberg, where visitors can learn about animals and nature. Guided forest bathing sessions are also offered in the forest.
At Lake Hallsjön on Halleberg, guided fishing is offered with equipment provided. Rainbow trout are regularly stocked there for put-and-take fishing. Visitors can canoe on Eldmörjan; the lake is just a short walk from the visitor center.
Beaver Safaris After Midsummer
Two beaver safaris depart after Midsummer from Besökscenter Destination HalleHunneberg in Bergagården. A canoe tour departs on Mondays, and a tour by wagon and on foot departs on Wednesdays; both last about three to four hours. The safari options therefore differ mainly in their day of operation and itinerary, not in their stated duration. Check the dates in advance if you would like to include a safari in your travel plans.
Landscape and Geological History
In the wider area around Vargön lies Öjemossarna, a 400-hectare wetland with several hundred forested islands. Also in the wider area, at the foot of Halleberg, is the 36-meter-high Skäktefallet waterfall, also known as Brudslöjan. The landscapes offer contrasting features: an extensive wetland with forested islands on the one hand, and a waterfall at the foot of a mountain on the other.
The mountains Halle and Hunneberg consist of sandstone, alum shale and diabase. Their geological history is presented through the fossil Grapto at the visitor center and museum. There are hollows in several places on Halle and Hunneberg. They are traces of old limestone caves from the 18th century, where limestone and shale were quarried. A path leads from Halleberg’s hillfort to the dramatic Ättestupa. Geology and earlier land use can thus be distinguished: Grapto conveys the geological history, while the cave traces point to the quarrying of limestone and shale in the 18th century.
